Hello all,
I looking at purchasing a new laptop soon, therefore will be running Windows 8....now the sales guy in PC World says Windows 8 crashes when running a free edition of say AVG...so I came away to research this for myself.

Has anyone got Windows 8 and are running AVG antivirus?
Any crashing issues with it?

AVG's web-site says it works with Windows 8, and has been designed for it, but not sure how old that statment is, then did they find the issues with it?

Yep put avg 2013 on a customers laptop with windows 8 and just went really slow and kept freezing, ended up using windows defender...

I see, had found parts confirming this online aswell.
Never been a fan of spending £60 for 12months antivirus cover......Sure AVG will sort it out, just when I wonder?

Is Windows defender any good?, free?

Yeah its free, built into windows 8 too... As for weather its anygood i couldnt say, the laptop hasnt had any viruses but its like 2 weeks old lol

Well sure if its suppose to be a antivirus prog it must do something, hopefully it does updates now and then to keep it fresh and updated?

I liked AVG, found it picked up a few virus in the past.
What would you recommend free or other?

Well we always used to use avg too but when 2013 got released we had a few issues with it making pcs slower and just generally being a bit rubbish like norton or mcafee, so we started to use microsoft security essentials which seemed to work fine, but you cant download it for windows 8 as they use the defender tool, which you shouldnt need to download if you just do a search for it it will probably be running already.....

Dont like the Norton/Mcafee subsriptions rubbish, not when you can get something better and for free.

So does Windows 8 come pre-loaded with am antivirus prog called Defender?.

I haven'y got Windows 8 yet, nearly did this morning but the sales guy throw a curve ball about the AVG, so thought I'd research it first.

MSE is now built into windows 8 and is simply called windows defender, no need for another anti virus imo

Yea should come all built in mate this was on a pro version tho so would be worth asking if getting a home version, but sure you will be able to download it if not....

Im guessing you were buying from currys/pc world? Im sure they must have a dealcwith norton cause they push really hard to sell it with a new pc/laptop even if its not required or wont be suitable etc.....

Had a quick look on Microsoft site and W8 comes with Windows Defender, which from the screenshots looks almost identical to MSE.

Yeah currys/pc world was where I popped to, I was getting pissed off with the guy following me about, probably partly why I walked away.
I just wasn't happy about spending £800 then another £65, now turns out he was talking poopoo lol.

I have now found via googling, W8 does come with Windows Defender, brought back from the dead it said, and it does a good job.
Just need to find out if its on W8 Home Edition if they still work like that?

Look decent spec laptops, as said try laptopsdirect maybe a little cheaper although you will have to wait for delivery... Im 99% sure the home version will have defender too

Microsoft security essentials is the best one to use IMHO, and it is free.

I used to use AVG but after trying MSE I now use that on all my pc's. So far it has picked up a number of infected files and I have no reason to think it has missed any.

I wouldn't touch norton with a barge pole, I get mcafee for free through BT but don't see any reason to use it over MSE and Windows firewall.

I found a video clip on youtube, a guy was testing out Windows Defender with loads of different virus's/spyware etc, to see if it picked them up...........
and it did, he was pleasently supprised with this, so I will be lol

So just to confirm this that now finally Windows have added a antivirus programme for their new Windows 8, brilliant.

I may pop back to shop tomorrow and purchase the Samsung.


oh one more question if I may, also youtube kicked up an upgrade called "Intel 330 SSD 180gb", they said it made it a lot faster than standard, and should have come with it in the first place.....does that mean anything to you guys?

Yeah ssd are a lot quicker, best upgrade I ever did to my desktop pc

In the 2 spec's I attached above do either of then say in the jargon if they are ssd I couldn't see it?
Can be done in laptops too?
Easy to do, no re-prog needed?

Neither listed have an ssd, full reinstall needed when installing an ssd as it stores the operating system

Upgraded to Windows 8 for £49.99.
Very nice (though distracting) OS.
It's like Window 7 but with a new touch style 'tile' overlay and better communication features. Is this MS trying to steal Apple shirt (again)?

Still running Norton Internet Security (NIS) at £45 for 3 pcs.
IMO £15 per year per pc is good value for the extra peace of mind.

And even anti-virus software developers need to eat and pay their bills.

With either of the 2 laptops in my link I'm still slightly unsure which one is best.
Samsung has 17"screen,one model up on Nividia card, but less on ram and processor.
Not really much between them Id say, but to a trained eye what you think?
