Default DVD Ripping Software

Hi, I'v got the kids Blackberry Playbooks for Christmas and I'm looking to rip some of our DVD collection into MP4/AVI so that the kids can watch them away from home. I've looked a couple of bits of software but they are all stopping me ripping them because of some copyright stuff. I'm not after downloading illegal stuff just letting the kids watch stuff we own on a different device - is there anything out there I can use that is cheap, preferably free

Cheers

Jon

Dvd shrink is what you use to compress the file, say to fit onto a 4.5gb blank dvd disc. Once compressed, you either burn it to a dvd using something like dvd decrypter or handbrake or you convert the file using something like AVS...not free but its a one off fee of around £30 and works excellent.

Try this to start off with:
1. Install Handbrake and VLC (Handbrake will try and use some of the libraries from VLC, hence why you need both)

2. Fire up Handbrake, pop in your DVD, select the Source option, point it at the inserted DVD. It will then scan the DVD. Typically it'll display a list of "Titles" on the disk. If it is a movie, then you'll usually see one title that is the length of the movie. If it's a dvd of a tv series then you'll probably see multiple titles for each episode. The time length of the title item will give you a clue as to it being an episode.

3. Pick the title item(s) you want, then select the preset you want. I don't see one specifically for the playbook, but have a read of the settings from here, or you could use the "Universal" one.

4a. Add the item to the Queue.

4b. Repeat if you have multiple titles you want to convert

5. Hit the start option and Handbrake will do it's thing. If all goes well the files will be converted and you can then copy them over to the playbook.

One thing of note, if you happen to get a DVD that is showing 99 titles in Handbrake, then there is a bit of a sneaky workaround. Fire up VLC and then start the movie (make sure it's the main movie you watch and not the trailers and other crap), it should tell you the title of the item you are watching. Note this down.
Fire up Handbrake, and there should be an item under the File menu named "Open Source (title specific)", this should allow you specify the exact title number that you noted down earlier.

Thanks for the help guys, the solution that seems to work is:

DVD Shrink - gets around the disc encryption.
Handbrake - convert to MP4.

It's a slow process but happy kids are priceless

This will allow any Windows program to bypass copy protection.

This is the one you need to rip DVD's
http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd-mobile.html

21 day trial period on both.

Magic DVD will decrypt virtually all current DVD's. So better than DVD shrink and Anydvd needs regular updates to keep it up to date.

MDVD is limited to 5 uses but you can get around that with a quick registry hack

Oh yeah, forgot to say Shrink usually gets around protection. I actually use DVD43 for that too.

No it doesn't mate. DVDShrink hasn't been updated for years, so alot of current DVD's which are using the latest protection it cannot crack.

DVD Decrypter, despite not having been updated for years, will decrypt virtually every DVD. DVDShrink really doesnt have any place in this thread, as its a transcoder which reduces the size of MPEG2 content.

DVD Decrypter will remove all of the protection leaving you with either an image or a folder which Handbrake can then work with. If DVD Decrypter cant decrypt the disc, which is rare/unlikely, then DVDFab offer a free utility which is kept up to date, which will.

Sorry but DVD Decrpyter also fails on a lot of current DVD's. I gave up using that years ago for that reason. DVDFab has also failed on the occasional one.

MagicDVD is the one to use, it hasn't failed me yet.

Use Handbrake - totally free and will decrypt dvd AND transcode to mp4. Note, depending on your machine and target (screen) size, it could take a while.

Other alternatives for decyrpting include the excellent MakeMKV (very handy for blu-ray's too).

It's also worth adding a 'foreign subtitle seach' and checking 'forced' and 'burn-in' with Handbrake. Then any subtitles for non-english will be present in the mp4 file.

Having tried a few of the suggestions the best seems to be Magic DVD and that's what I'm going with. It's the only one so far that does it in a reasonably timely manner and has managed to sort the Disney stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean

Thanks for the help

Backing up DVD's is not piracy so yeah, not a hypocrite.

Mine are all backed up onto a 2 tb NAS drive to stream to my HTPC which is completely legal.

Errrrm no sir, that is piracy!

You need to freshen up and read the UK copyright laws. You are not allowed to make backups of any media even if you bought it.

Bloody hypocritical pirate

Absolutely spot on. That is why I mentioned the combo of VLC and handbrake, as it will leverage the decryption libraries in VLC

I tend to agree having used that and DVD Magic back-to-back. Handbrake takes about 4-times as long and add on the time it takes DVD Shrink to create the video file as I can't get it to rip straight from the DVD then DVD Magic is the sensible option.
