No nobody replied...

It is for one of our corporate customers I am setting up a multisite VPN and there is several sites in Scotland (i.e most of Scotland) where there is no broadband thus we have to go satellite.

Have you done anything with it/using it

I've done some trials with one customer so I'm happy to answer questions if I can.

Jeff:

As usual, I'm interested in these things (having spoken to BT yesterday especially!!).

Which satellite company were they trialing?

Hello

Actually, this looks interesting:

http://www.satdrive.com/ and not too expensive considering it is satellite. We will have to see what happens when they launch next month.

satdrive mmmm its capped, u gotta pay for your downloads per month and the cheapest is, 35/mnth capped for only 512mb plus your rental fee plus installation which sucks. If it was unlimited it would be nice, seeing as its up to 2mbit download speed Otherwise youre limited to 128kbps download speeds, no thanks.

Hello

Yep .. although 128K isn't too bad as a starting point.

The cheapest that I can get that is with Demon at £60pm with ISDN. Until GIO get their act together of course ...

boxst to be honest id rather stick with 56k or ISDN as you say, and no download limits, but I understand where youre coming from, as I to cannot get dsl/cable either Remember the installation of their sat is at least £350 and I didnt look, but maybe u need to use a modem still for uploads.

The killer with all the Satellite offerings is latency. Typically its in the range of 700ms - 1sec (ADSL is around 20-30 ms to the ISPs router). This doesn't sound a lot but when your trying to set-up a VPN it can be an issue. A lot of equipment times out during Phase 1 negiotation or thinks that there is a IPSec replay going on. I have seen it work with a VPN tunnel but its a bit hit or miss.

The latency isn't an issue if your downloading large files but is a pain if your doing anything that is time sensitive (Citrix, Terminal Server, Games, VPN etc).

Its always going to be expensive because of the nature of the equipment and there is the added issue that you may need planning permission if you already have a Sky Dish.

Jeff:

Really? Okay.

Can't you just add another LNB to the Sky one?

Err....no

Its a different satellite and there is an uplink (in most cases) so it would fry your Sky LNB.

Eeek.

Still, another little dish on the roof is slightly better than the 1 meter dish you had to have in the garden when I looked at satellite a year or so ago !!

Hi Jeff

Paddock wood? You just need a kindly person in Tonbridge to set up a (okay, quite big!) consume wireless node. You are only stones throw away!

The person at The Register is a good reporter -- and picked up on a throw away comment at the bottom of one of my pages. I managed to get over 5000 individiual TCP/IP hits to my site yesterday -- my ISP nearly had a fit!

Steve.

If I could get line of site it would be a doodle with 802.11 (10 Miles with a directional ariel !) but I'd need to do some landscaping (flatten a hill ) for it to work.

Jeff

1) Dig a small cave in the hill.
2) Find some old guns and mortar shells.
3) Hide (2) in (1)
4) Place an anonymous phone call to the Royal Marines

Hey presto - one less hill
