Exchange Defrag
#1
Tried to defrag Exchange over the weekend, had a problem though that it did not have enough space. Current size is 4.9Gb,(the priv file) and with only that on the disk, it could not run the defrag. Physical disk size is 9Gb. I have another server with lots of space but it has not got exchange on it. Tried copying across the eseutil to the new server, and then went back and copied all ese*.* from winnt/systems 32 to the new server and again tried running eseutil from there. All the information comes up, but when I tried eseutil /g exchange /ispriv it would not work. BTW "exchange" is the folder that the copied priv and pub files are in. Any thoughts what I can do (apart from not let it get so big in the future?).

As far as I can remember you need at least three times as much space as the DB... its been years since i did exchange... Im sure someone who still works with it would be better at answering this though.

Thanks PTMW
Why not just add some more hard drive space to this server. run the exchange optimizer then defrag?
For the sake of buying an extra hard drive it would save a whole stack of problems....

Why go to the bother of defragging it? You've got enough disk space, no where near the 16Gb store limit in the standard edition of Exchange. Unless it's something that I'm missing (such as your backup media can only take a certain amount), I'd leave the information stores well alone.

Hmmm, option of buying more space is there, but backup is the problem, only have a old seagate 10Gb back up tape, and do not really want to buy a new one!
This server only really runs some of our services eg exchange and runs our own software. Newer server we store most of the information on, where space and backup is not an issue.
I guess the answer to my question is that there is not an easy thing I am missing!
Thanks though and will let you know what I do.
