Default Router has died

My netgear 300 router has died I have tried to install a d link router but with no luck. The modem has internet connection when plugged directly into the pc but when I try and install the router it won't pick up the internet. What am I doing wrong?

The d link router isn't a very good one but I got it free a few years ago from Virgin and it almost lost its viginity today. its a dir-615

IT is a different router as mine was a Netgear and the one I'm trying to use is a d link. I have even had to put an older operating system on my pc to try and get the dlink to work as it wouldn't recognise windows 8.

If I have to buy another router I may as well just upgrade on virgin and get them to gove me a free one with a faster connection but I was hoping it was a simple fix

you can use other routers as long as it supports the internet you use and is configured to do so.

are you on Virgin cable or ADSL internet?
