can somebody help me please?

my computer is constantly making the noise like it does when it is loading, and it hasnt stopped doing it.
also, all my word documents including my final year degree project (that has to be in on friday) will not open properly. they open, but instead of letters, there are countless squares on the page instead.
also, i have about 70 digipics saved, again for my project, they wont open either, there is just a small red cross that appears at the top left of the screen?

i desperately need to sort this problem, any help really appreciated.

thanks, ian.

Before you do anything else, get a box of floppies & copy all the pics and docs onto them - better if you have a CD-R or can get one, or a Zip or something.

Copy them now JIC something goes **** up big time. Don't give them to someone else to test just yet in case of virus.

Have you de-installed any programs recently? Looks like your "associations" have become corrupted for some reason or prehaps the ends of filenames have changed/been changed.

ill do that then, copy them onto disk even though they look dodgy.

just a note: i can open all other things such as cad, powerpoint etc and they are fine?

ive right-clicked on the docs to check the file type before, they all say microsoft word document as they should?

thanks again, ian.

You're getting a lot of disk access/read-write happening - thats the fluttering sound.

Many reasons for that but one could be a lack of space? Also lack of "System Resources" ie memory. Has your HDD been de-fragged recently, at all (Shut up Willie ). Do you have months of old internet access files stacked away?.

After the b/up delete temp files, delete temp int files/history & do a defrag. Maybe uninstall those unwanted games/shareware progs that are cluttering up your system first?

the word file is corrupted. could happen when saving of the word file is not complete or the file is cross-linked.

i first saved these weeks/months ago, and have accessed them quite a few times to ammend bits etc, and have worked fine till this morning.

could be bad sector on the HDD, so when you save the file, some of the file was saved on the bad bit of the HDD. so you get half and half of a file, and because of that, word or any other applications wont recognise the file.

do a throught "check disk" of your HDD which will also check for any bad sectors on your HDD.

Unhappy

Strangely enough I spent four hours looking at a mates machine yesterday with exactly the same problem.

His machine was also failing to load certain programs on boot.

All his word and excel documents are corrupt (little squares etc..)

Only solution for the PC was to re-build with a fresh installation of Win98, however, I moved all the corrupted docs to a floppy and have just started to try and "fix" them at work.

It's not looking very promising at the moment but I'll let you know if they can be recovered at all....

Have you got either a Mac or had you put your pics in an HTML page or something?
