Has anyone got any comments on the LaCie Hexa Media Drive, which can read SmartMedia, CompactFlash, MicroDrive, Multimedia, SD and and Memory Stick (phew!) - primarily in a Mac environment (see http://www.lacie.co.uk/?

Also, any thoughts on FireWire drives for Macs (e.g. LaCie as above)? This is both for backup or workng storage.

LaCie stuff in generally very good. However I'm not sure what the score is with laCie as they have reduced the credit limits to many resellers which leads me to think they may be in a bit of trouble. If you are looking for Firewire drives also look at VST, Maxtor, and Formac.

What size are you looking for ?

have a look at samsung pocket flash reader.

for external HDD, i would recommend the maxtor firewire. a mate got it and it is fast, robust and reliable (used it everyday and travel with it as well). western digital just came out with a similar firewire HDD as the maxtor. check them out.

Allan,

it would be a shame if LaCie were in touble, 'cos they always seem to have a strong media coverage (paper media that is!).

I'll have a look at the other manufacturers n'all. I am after a 7200rpm disk at least 60GB so that i can back up everything on my iMac as well as have a little temp space for stuff like DV editing.

Suba,

The Samsung unit looks pretty good

Cheers,

mb

I work with a bunch of designers who have Lacie firewire pocket drives. They seem well happy with them, no reported probs. They are tiny (physically) I think now go up to 60gig, and are powered by the firewire cable (at least that's true for Macs), so no power supply to fiddle with either.

You could always get an iPod. 400 notes buys you a MP3 player with a 10gig firewire drive built in.
