i7 2600K CPU temperature.
Guys,
just bought a bundle from Scan to upgrade my existing PC, consisting of an ASUS P8Z68-V Gen 3, i7 2600K (std Intel cooler not overclocked) and 8GB ram, all supplied assembled and tested. Re-built my system with Win 7, only using on-board graphics at the moment.
Everything is OK except whilst rendering a movie in Sony Vegas, I’m getting an onscreen warning about CPU temp, using the ASUS Ai suite system check, I can see that the CPU temp is going as high as 80deg. I’ve contacted Scan who said not to worry as 85-90 is OK. I’ve tried it without the side on the case and it makes no difference, it seems that the temp immediately goes high as soon as it starts very working hard, suggesting CPU cooling is not up to scratch.
Having a look around it seems that 60-70deg would seem to be the preferred range, should I be worried and look at better CPU cooling? If 80deg is not a problem why does the ASUS software warn me?
CPU temp at idle/normal operation is 23-35deg.
Room temp 20deg.
One 120mm case fan.
CPU fan reading 2000rpm at max.
Vcore reading 1.34v max, about 1v at idle.
CPU peaking at about 85% activity.
Having said all that the thing renders an 8 minute movie in about 15 mins, my old dual core took 4 hours

I've got an i7-2600k overclocked bundle from Scan, just tried converting a video file (avi to mp4) and the CPU temp went from 39degs on idle to 54degs.
The fan they put on the CPU is massive

Haven't got the box anymore but the invoice states: Arctic Cooler Freezer 13 FZ130-BL
I even redid the encoding whilst simultaneously playing The Matrix in 1080p full screen on one screen and Southpark on the other screen. Temp still didn't go above 54degs.
Is your case allowing decent airflow?
Edit, forgot I took a pic of the bits when they arrived.

Thanks, was looking at the Artic Freezer 7 pro for about £15 gets good reviews.
Can't believe case cooling is the issue as the temp ramps very quickly from 23 to 80. I did wonder if it's because I'm using the on-chip graphics, but you can set Vegas to render using the CPU only and it didn't make any difference.
Actually....just thinking about it I might have got that the wrong way round, if I'm correct I have on-chip graphics and on-board graphics, I wonder if I set Vegas to use the GPU, would it use the on-board?

Download cputemp and run that. It'll tell you the temp of each core of the cpu. You should see busy ones run hotter than the slacker ones. My 2600K at 4.6Ghz only gets up to 64 deg C when all cores are flat out. Again it's got an after market cooler on it and someone else applied the paste. I'm rubbish at that, even having watched videos on youtube I still suck at it

I had a similar issue with the stock cooler when I got an icore 7 last year. Soon as I turned it on the BIOS was flagging temp errors. There was thermal paste on the stock cooler but not enough in my opinion.
Me and me Dad added more thermal paste to the cooler and re-connected the board. After that it was fine.
Had to do this again recently as the thermal paste had dissipated a little and the temp was rising.
Ignore Scan when they say 80-90'c is OK it isn't. I think after 100 the CPU will shut down to stop it melting itself.

Just noticed that Core Temp is reporting 4430MHz 103.02x43 is that right for an non overclocked chip, I thought std was 3.4GHz?

Looks like it,
My overclocked stats are
Memory Frequency 1605.92 MHz
BCLK 100.38 MHz
CPU Frequency 4.52 GHz (non-Turbo Frequency 3413.2MHz)
Vcore 1.43 V
DRAM Voltage 1.52 V
edit, on idle my CPU temp of 36degs equates to the hottest core at 44degs.

Having trouble getting hold of Scan at the moment, but this was purchased as not overclocked, so my options are to RTB, or fit a cooler myself. Need to make sure I don't mess up any warranty.
Scan's award winning customer service will hopefully kick in at some point

You could de-tune it back to the stock settings yourself, see if it makes a difference? At the end of the day you can always put it back to it's current settings before sending it back?

That bios setting is wrong mate, its overclocked and a 103 bus can cause issues with some loadings. I would set it to auto, someone somewhere has screwed that up.
Your easiest and fastest solution here is to Hit F5 to load optimised defaults, then F10 to save and exit, that should leave you with 100mhz bus and x38 multiplyer.

Do I need to be concerned about the damage a 103 bus could have caused?

The CPU temp is perfectly safe up where it was, although certainly not optimal. The CPU doesnt even throttle till 90C at which point it will lower its own speed to reduce temperature.

I doubt it, cause although it got hot it was still (just) within the design tolerances.
edit, the overclocking guru beat me too it

Didn't have much time last night, but I did quickly attempt F5/F10 in the bios and when it rebooted it was still 4429/43/103............I'm fairly sure I did it correctly?
I'll try it again tonight.
