Default Strange problem with DVD drives after replacing graphics card

The graphics card on my father's desktop computer recently died. I have replaced it, and everything is working fine... except that, on startup, the computer repeatedly tries to access the two DVD drives before eventually loading up XP. I can't see how this can be related to the graphics card, but it certainly didn't have this issue previously. The drives 'crunch' about 7 or 8 times each, and there are no discs in them. I have disabled them from the startup sequence in the bios, but that made no difference. Any ideas?!

Check that the BIOS is being updated, it sounds as if the default setting is being used.
