My double up letter came through last week. I'll be going up to 100Mb end of July. Sounds good to me. They reckon they will then give it a free boost to 120 - 130Mb. Hope they cut your bill if you're only getting the same as I will be.

Still quite pleased with results, as until BlueYonder Cable integrated with Virgin.net to become VirginMedia my Virgin.net ADSL used to be shocking!!

Mine from BT. This is quite recent as I rang them up last month saying I was going to cancel and move away. Net result was a ~£30 reduction in monthly costs (Broadband, TV and phone) and a massive increase in my broadband speed. Prior to this test I was getting about 8Mbit/s.

ahhh but £42 a month from Virgin Media. they are doubling everyone elses this summer. they cannot double mine unfortunately. as SW said, they will boost my connection to about 130Mbit and reduce my monthly bill to compensate the top tier broadband customer. I am lucky. the cabinet is at the bottom of my garden and very few in my area are actually on the 100Mbit connection.

Its always worth checking it out yourself to be sure. Try this: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

Stick your number and post code in (safe btw) And it'll show how well/badly equipped your exchange is. My guessing it isn't even 21CN, our works line was only upgraded to 21CN at the end of last year, depsite being scheduled to be done in March 2010 Even now line speed/ isn't great (4mbps), but its better than before

To double check everything, if you know anything about router stats enter your line attenution into here: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

If the approx line distance is significantly longer than what the actual distance from the exchange is (fround from the first link), then you have a problem, be it in the house (i.e ring wire still being connected) , your master socket itself, or the line into your house.

Try and find your downstream attenuation from your router:

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

(this can be a pain in the **** with some routers like Belkin etc)

I hadn't seen that one before, I usually use SamKnows but that is much more informative.

Exchange is 600 meters away for me (I get 18.7mb on BE*) with an upgrade to BT Infinity (FTTC) due 1st March.

That attenuation appears to be ok.

By rights that should get you at least 5mbps (kitz reckon 8Mbps on 21CN!).

I don't know where to go from there as the line is ok, so its either a problem with the exchange, the modem/router or the computer itself

I'd be plugging my router directly into the internal master socket in the house and trying again as thats shocking, you must have some cable probs in the house as previously mentioned. Do you know where your master socket is? its split in half... Un screw the face plate, there is another bt socket inside, that your faceplate plugs into, try your router in the internal socket if possible, as this totally eliminates any shat wiring in the house, bell ring wire etc.

I had a similiar prob a few yrs back, turns out an prev house occupant ran a business from home and had at least three phone lines coming in, i had two master sockets on one circuit that played havoc!!, bt came round ripped it all out and completely rewired the house right from outside for a small charge. The engineer said he'd never seen anything like it.

That got me around a 3mb improvement!

Google this, loads of sites showing u how to find master and disconnect bell wire etc.... Hope this helps.
