Got it working - ended up downloading 10.7.3 update too!

How do you choose what to use to send messages? I have a contact that is also a gtalk contact and also on iMessage.

The same chat window shows I've used both Jabber and iMessaging to talk to him!

Word of note (if not in original link), it seems that once out of beta it will only run on Mountain Lion (wtf? when did that get announced! You go offline for a week and all manner of things pop up - was this the feb announcement that people were on about previously?)

Yes, somewhere (Cult of Mac?) looked through the code and found a message buried inside there about it being disabled and only working on Mountain Lion.

They didn't say when the beta expires though and I'm still quite impressed I can send iMessages to people and they pop up on all devices when replied to.

I agree, it's a very quick turnaround OS wise. Lion was released in late July last year, and this is alleged to be late summer this year. Pretty sure Snow Leopard came out late August 2009.

I do have some recollection of something being said when Lion was being developed that there would be faster OS rollouts for OS X.

Money is the simple answer, the stuff that comes with mountain lion could easily be added with a lion update I bet!
