Hold fire for a while. Yes that is the right direction but don't assume that the video in your Presentation will play in Keynote, especially on the iPad.
In all honesty you'd be better off paying a youth a pound to drag the video and pictures and whatever else you have in your presentation onto a memory stick, 5 minute job. Then stick that in your friends PC and use Airplay to send it to the Apple TV, if you really want to involve the iPad then copy the files to your friends PC and sync the files to it.

I'll check if they have a "mac" in the house, I just want to get the PP onto their big screen tv as the relative is partially sighted so bigger piccy the better, he won't have much luck with my 10 inch samsung screen. The PP is already on a usb including all the associated files, I know this works ok in lecture theatres etc on PC.

There is a really easy way you can get the ppt onto their Ipad if you have ever used dropbox? It's a free app used to sync files between multiple devices/platforms and ideal for large files that cannot be emailed. You get 2gb storage for free. Saves trying to take a usb stick to someones house and faffing about on their computer etc. You can also make files/folders shared in dropbox for others to access.
Basically you can install dropbox on your pc and have the file uploaded to your storage. Then they just need dropbox installed on their ipad - all of about 30 seconds to download and then another 30 seconds to sign up to. The file can then be played directly from dropbox.

This is a MUCH better solution to playing Powerpoint presentations on an iPad - but unfortunately it doesnt play embedded videos. Anyway, check it out - and it's free!

BY the way (and I have learnt the hard way), any videos that are .avi or.wmv will not play on a PP presentation that has been converted to keynote. You have to convert every video into .mpeg format
Apart from that using dropbox or synching it to the ipad via a computer will do the trick
