Default Broadband Stabilisation Period

Ive recently moved house and have signed upto SKYs TV/BB package. We were told that the average speed for our new postcode was 20mbps.....Ok its a drop from the 50meg DL and 5meg UL we had with Virgin but seeing as Virgin have no lines to our new house we opted for SKY.

..........anyway, we have finally been connected today(only taken 3 weeks!) So i carried out a connection test via speedtest.net. I was amazed to see speeds of 0.29mbps DL and 0.09mbps UL!!!

So not impressed with the speeds ive just called SKY only to be told that there is a ten day stabilisation period where over the course of the ten days the connection speed will improve!! Surley this is just "fob me off" bollox??

no they do have that, although even that does seem low! Check your router in the morning you will probably see better stats

Where about's are you Jay, just for a comparison?

We're with Sky, and ours is 4.3mbps down and 0.6mbps upload. Not great, but I think that's about as fast as we can get without paying silly money to Virgin.

It was stupid low like yours when we first switched to them, but, improved after a couple of days.

The distance between your house and your nearest exchange will determine what you will realistically get from your provider.

Thanks for that Jon, that has come back with 3.5mbps......If that is correct then they have blatantly lied to me!!

Ooh my giddy aunt. According to that we should be able to get ~5.5Mbps

Jay, not really a good comparison then.

I was told 7 mb, went through the stabilization period and have 10mb up and 1.2mb down. Used http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ to measure it.

When you have just been connected your connection will drop/re-connect quite frequently over a 10 day period.

During this time your connection stats are averaged out which ends up giving you your final connection speed and in turn gives you the most stable connection.

Sometimes you may log on to your router and find its sync'd up at a high speed but due to the distance you are from the exchange this could be too high and in turn would cause your connection to continually drop if you was to always have that speed connection, so by going through the 10 day period the ISP works out the best performance along with giving you the most stable connection.

They probably said "UP TO" 20Mb, rather than thats what you would actually get as line distance etc will determine that.

Sky here in co. Down. Went from 2mb down and 400k or so up with BT. Sky called one day saying they could do a lot better. Decided that with the cheaper tv/bb and phone was worth a shot. I initially got 11mb down and 640k up that settled to a reasonable 7.5mb down and 640k up. I could move to a realistic 30mb infinity but to be honest most sites etc can't push data more than a couple of mb/sec so it's a bit pointless.

The SamKnows site above shows mine should be around 6.5. My old Talk Talk was at around 10, when I got Sky they told me 10. First week was poor, but did gradually get faster like they said it would. After a week was at full speed and got 11-12, still get that now.

Christ Jay, how are you coping without the Xbox?

We've had the same issues with Virgin, they just don't seem to want new customers

It does take 10 days to train but despite that your stats seem spectacularly low. What speed is the router reporting that it's syncing at? What are your line stats?

Also take a close look at you phone wiring, if you have extensions running from the master socket either filter them at the master socket or at least disconnect the bell wire as this is known to cause cr*p ADSL speeds. All you need to know is here: http://www.rob-r.co.uk/other/UKphonecatwiring.htm

You can remove the face plate off the master socket an plug the router straight into the test socket thus removing any extension wiring from the equation. See if things improve then.

Go onto BTs internet sales page, and put your phone number in.
It will tell you the aprox speed of your line. Its quite accurate. They say mine is 2MB and its always between 1.2 and 1.6MB.

Sky really should be quoting this figure, not the system max...

HTH.

It is kind of silly saying up to as noone else advertises their products like this.

"The New subaru impreza, up to 150mph"
"Heinz Baked Beans up to 500 beans per tin"
"Durex condoms, up to 36 hours of pleasure "
"Buckfast new improved concoction now with up to 5 extra punch-ups per bottle"

It should really read the averages

"The New subaru impreza, average speed 23 mph"
"Heinz Baked Beans average 30 sharts per tin"
"Durex condoms, average 2 minutes pleasure for him "
"Buckfast new improved concoction average contents induce heartburn and headaches"

Etc etc but I would expect the throughput to be a lot higher than yours at the start of the training period

TBH, if its that low just power off your router overnight and then reboot the router in the morning. It will start the line quality tests again if its still that low I would contact them.

it can take 10 days

Im sat on the exchange but had an issue with BT Business my router was 1mb down 0.1 up i complained guy came out and fixed line. I got same tale so i watched it and indeed it did stabalize and im now 16mb down and 1.5 up

If after that 10 days it doesnt send a rocket.

basics are as Coffin said, you modem just connect to another Modem at the Exchange the handshakes train and stabalize.

But it takes time,

BT quoted us 4.5 - 6. We're getting 9.2. Sam said we have FTTC available but we haven't.

Are you on sky's own equipment or bt?
With those stats you will be lucky to get 4500 kbps.
Noise margin will probably decrease to around 6 or 7 which will increase the speed, however your line attenuation is quite high (lower the better) Do you get any interference at all on the phone when making calls?

Here are mine on sky
Connection Speed 12282 kbps 1117 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.4 db 8.9 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db 8.9 db

Sky's equipment Jay.....As for noise when making a call, the Mrs says no it seems fine.........i havent used the home phone yet...

The speed improvement has come from me removing the face of the master and plugging the router in....apart from that, there are no real signs of it improving greatly.
