Default Anyone excited about Siri

I wasn't going to get an iphone 4s, but i think i will now.

http://www.cultofmac.com/122098/what...at-about-siri/

"Android Voice Actions is great technology, and is widely used by many Android fans. But it’s not really in the same class as Siri.

[Siri is] not “voice recognition.” It’s artificial intelligence. And A.I. in your cell phone is a very big deal.

...

You can say things that technically or literally have nothing to do with what you mean, but Siri will in many cases figure out what you mean based on context, history and and artificial intelligence designed to understand regular human speech.

For example, if you want to set an alarm for your nap, just say “wake me up in 20 minutes.” If you want to know what meetings you have scheduled for later, you can say, “how does the rest of my day look?”

These inputs specifically reference neither the application to be used nor the information desired. Yet Siri understands.

Are you Sirious?
The demo of it does look impressive, and I should have at least one 4S to play, sorry, compatibility test, with next week so I'll have a poke around with it. I'm waiting for all the management people to get them and start talking to them, the place will sound even more like a mad house

James, you didn't read the text obviously.

Android offers voice recognition. Siri is one of the first artificial intelligence applications actually useful and available to the masses.

EVA on Android does the same, not just voice recognition. It's not that great though, maybe I need to talk to it with an American accent. When using it and saying "done" to tell it I have finished wanting to write a facebook update or create a memo, it keeps thinking I have said "Dawn". Other parts work well though, you can say you've just spend Ł30 on petrol or Ł10 on food and it remembers. You can then ask it how much you've spent and it will give you a run down of your expenses. You can ask it what's on your agenda for next Friday and it will check your calender for appointments and tell you. I'm sure SIRI will be a lot better, if Apple have built it into the OS they must be confident in it, will be interesting to see.

You do look like a complete tit using it though.

Just wait until everyone's doing it! There's no way that, with the development of technology, we're still going to be doing something as laborious as using our fingers to press buttons to enter commands.

I don't think it'll take off. Some things are just left private:

"Search for Octopus **** and then book a hooker .. "

Not true at all. EVA works with Applications, Applications work with Siri. Big difference. Maybe google will buy EVA and build it into Android, then it might stand a chance.

are you talking about Siri on an iphone 3G ?

If you are then a ton of people are going to be disappointed when iOS5 comes out with no Siri

yep, siri has been available for iphone since 3, apple bought out the company that makes siri in 2010 and removed the app from the market, its had tweeks since then of course, but its not new.

ChefDude, I did read the post but my comment still stands I disagree that it is useful, it's a gimick which the novelty will wear off of very quickly and as above people will look crazy using it.

As i've said in other posts i'm not anti apple, I was hoping for an Iphone 5 which genuinely offered something new which I could buy into when my contract expires, I'm still hoping for something revolutionary next year from Apple, if nothing appears then I will stay with Android, but heres hoping for a Iphone 5 next year

The iPhone will come next year. Estimate for a july launch.
It will take a different form factor bit not be much bigger then the 4s. The screen size and physical size is the sweetspot for users unlike the Samsung latest model as you need man hands to handle those

It will have 1GB of ram, a fully clocked and fast A5 chip, maybe tweaked

Slightly better camera etc but capacity will still be the same though you 'may' see 128GB

I suppose SIRI will be useful for business people that do a lot of driving. They can check meeting times and stuff on the move without taking hands off the wheel or even looking at the phone.

supply and demand. Normally we demand stuff and they supply it. In this case they supplied stuff that we didnt think we needed but now we demand new things all the time so they supply it even faster

I think it is quite good when you are driving. I like the fact that on bluetooth I can press a button on the steering wheel and say 'Call Joanna', it responds with work or home etc...

For normal, everyday use, probably not ...

doesn't it do that now in ios4?

i like the idea of asking all those irritatingly distracting questions, like conversions and lookup questions and not having to type SMSs anymore

It does do that is iOS 4. I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that I will be able to do something similiar with email and text messages with Siri.

I haven't decided whether I am going to get a 4S yet. My wife's contract is up in a few days so it is tempting ...
