I have a compaq pc amd 1ghz etc and would like to upgrade possibly building my own. What parts can I transfer from my compaq to a new motherboard and case, and what are the most economical parts to buy I use the computer mainly for online gaming and web browsing.

why not keep the compaq as it is and get a new one? have a look at www.todayonly.co.uk for some partial built PCs or build your own from scratch.
to answer your questions, you can transfer floppy, memory, CPU, cables and HDD. since you gonna be using it for games, get a good graphic card.
