PS3 slim vs original fat
Is there any advantage of changing from the old fat ps3 to the new slim one (apart from hard drive size and a new warranty)?
I can get a trade in of £100 on my 3 year old 40gb fat one and get the slim 160gb for £79.99 extra (with any game purchased so 99p pre owned will do).
I'm in 2 minds though whether to do it and keep the nice shiny one which is still scratch free and just spend £40 on a new hard drive.

I have both one fat has custom firmware and my slim is legit
the slim is smaller and quieter (you cant hear it at all) but saying that my it quite quiet I think the main thing is it has better cooling but again ive had no issues with my fat and its 3 years old - I have a 640 gig HD in my fat and a 320 gig HD in my slim
the HD`s are cheap to upgrade so I wouldnt bother and keep the fat until it dies TBH

No my 40gb only has 2 usb ports and no backward compatibility - they were the 60gb ones that went for a fortune (and I had one of the last ones reserved and never picked it up )
The trade in is at Game, was supposed to end Saturday but was still on yesterday and I called this morning and stil on.

Is this the offer - on till 19/09/11.
I'm in the same boat - got the 40gb as the 60gb was no longer available when I got mine - great console but just find mine pretty noisy - especially when letting it upscale DVD's - fan steps up a speed and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner!

Got 2 360's already A new hard drive off ebuyer will set me back about £35-£40 for 250gb so depends if it's worth spending another £40+ on the years warranty I will get plus the dual shock controller - I don't think it is, so may just upgrade the drive.

I've got a 60Gb, and an 80Gb fat model as well as a newer slim. The slim is smaller, quieter and downloads much faster then my fats. It also uses less power. I do prefer the look of the fats though.

Yep i've noticed how much quieter it is and also seems to download much faster. Wasn't happy that the backup I took didn't restore all downloads, just game data and profiles basically. What was the point of nearly 2 hours to back up but only 30 seconds to restore! I've had to re download everything which ran all day yesterday and still got another 12gb to do today. Also don't like that the power off button on the back has been done away with so can't actaully power it off properly without turning off the wall socket.
It feels to me i've traded in a high quality product (weighed about twice as much for starters) for a replacement that is inferior in build quality.

Why would the new slim download faster? When I download stuff, it verily zips along at a rate similar to downloading stuff on my PC. I am using ethernet connection through Homeplugs on a 'up to 24mbps' link.

500GB Samsung M7 drive (the one you want ideally) is £39!
Since you've upgraded now it's irrelevant, but thought it worth posting for others thinking of upgrading the HD.

Its worth it for the quietness you get with the slim. Plus, if you still have a Phat, the Yellow Light of Death is usually just around the corner.
You can buy a switch to power down the slim if needed: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PS3-POWER-...item3cba6665c5
Thw downloads speeds whould be trhe same, as the ethernet hardware didn't change.

Mine are connected through WiFi, the slim downloads things much faster than the fat. I don't know if the WiFi hardware is different between the two, they are both in the same room, but when downloading map packs for COD for example. Starting at the same time the slim has finished way before the fat.
