Hello all,
I've had a WWW-free weekend - which not a good thing!
I've got a cable connection to the internet through Chello (I'm based in Amsterdam) - been working fine for 18 months now up to this weekend.
If I try to access a web-site through my browser I get a 'cannot find server' error page.
Strange thing is that Kazaa is working fine, so I'm thinking maybe the problems are with my ISP.
This is not browser specific - tried it with Opera too.
BTW I'm running Ad-Subtract and Zonealarm Pro
Any tips for a diagnosis would be most useful...

Speak to your ISP. I had problems in the past with web traffic because my ISP does transparent proxying on all port 80 traffic. This means that any web pages allways go through some proxy on their network. This was also the time that the IIS webserver ( I think it was code red, or nvida?) virus were rampant, and the proxy's were getting really badly hit for page requests, and my www traffic went through the floor!
Was still able to play CS though..

just managed to speak to my ISP..
According to their tech person the problem is Zone Alarm..
Despite the fact it's worked fine for a year - apparently ' it can work for months then it will start blocking ports'
Switching off Zone Alarm isn't enough according to tech support - I need to uninstall the program.
Then I need to switch off the power to the cable modem for 30 secs, type IPCONFIG /RELEASE then IPCONFIG /RENEW at the DOS Prompt (W2k).
Switch it all back on again and it should work...
Is this correct or am I being fobbed off?

Oh, and if Kazaa works then the IPCONFIG commands aint needed as you've already been assigned an IP address.
You only need to renew your IP if you havn't picked one up when you booted up.
Typical tech support eh!, reboot, reload, go away- I'm trying to look at Scoobynet ere

Had a similar thing, it was the ISP in the end, I was getting assigned an IP but then the default gateway / router was just ignoring me !! thanks !!
I just kept releasing / renewing until it noticed me took over an hour some days, but it was quicker than phoning and waiting on the phone with the annoying ******* music they play only to be told after an hour of waiting that the dosy cow on the helpdesk couldnt answer my call and would need to put me thru to Tech support !! Great !
