Default MS Security Essentials problem

Just noticed that the security alert is up in the system tray, it says the virus protection is now off and the essentials has a "!" saying it's out of date. I keep updating, but it continues to say it's out of date. Rebooted etc, still both are not playing ball.

Anyone have any ideas?

Check the system date on your pc first, then if thats ok then I would be tempted to un install it - making sure all the registry entries have gone for it, and the folder is deleted, Ccleaner is ok for this. Reboot and then reinstall it and see if it updates ok then. I've seen it play up if it thinks your copy of Windows in not genuine, and or if its a bit behind on updates.
I've had 2 pc's where its just not played ball (which have had previous problems & owner has not wanted to do a backup and a full re install), so I've stuck on avira instead.

Hmmm, system date was 2 months on. Just set back but it's not updating, so will try the rest of your ideas and let you know. Thanks.
