Well I am not going to stop you

Even though they are pricey, the initial outlay is easily averaged out by the lack of need to AV it, the constant updating and all the built in free software that come loaded on them.
Unless there is a particular programme that you need to run under windows, then you should be fine but even then you can always run virtual box.
Two in the range on the 13",, 2.3GHz and 2.7Ghz, 300GBHD and 500GB HD

Just do it. Saying that Dell have a rather nice looking laptop coming out soon, funnily enough it's pretty much a copy of a Macbook.

I have the misfortune to work for a company that has to deal with Dell. I'd never buy anything from them.

I have an Apple laptop, you can't go wrong with one.

If it's the costs that are worrying you, buy a refurb one from Apple, they have the same warranty as the brand new machines, I've bought 3 from them in the past and they were all perfect, no marks or signs of any use. And they're usually about 10 or 20% cheaper

Just got the Macbook Air for my wife, previously she had a slow netbook so she loves the Macbook.

I still use my Sony Vaio, but I did have to set some bits up for her, first time using a Mac and some of it is intuitive (like the iPhone), but it is difficult to lose that right click. (I know you can get it back somehow).

Lovely machines, go for it, but be prepared for some slight changes.

Interesting. Almost all of our laptops and desktops (even servers) at work have been provided by Dell, (must have well over 1000 machines) and we've not had any real problems. My main development laptop (which I'm just replacing for a quicker Dell model) has been used about 8-9 hours a day, 5/6 days a week, for the last 4.5 years and it's still absolutely fine (just a bit slow now for my needs).

I also have a Dell XPS laptop at home, which hasn't skipped a beat in the last 6 years, (and another newer one which has proven to be just as reliable so far). Not spent any money on AV software for the laptops. MS security essentials is free and seems to do a good job. Not caught anything yet

I have on the other hand, had lots of problems with Apple software and hardware, and have had major issues with their support (or lack of it) and cavalier attitude towards customers.

i have to admit that laptops have always been a stopgap machine until i could get back to working on a desktop machine. that is until i got my macbook pro. excellent screen and the best keyboard i've encountered on a laptop for years. the trackpad just works. I can actually work and process images on a MBP.

You're all mental, it's just a PC with better marketing, Linux with expensive clothes. There's absolutely no advantage to tailoring the operating system to suit the hardware. Windows is better and Linux is betterer. Fashion victims the lot of you.

Don't forget that if you do get a new mac laptop (intel based) then you can dual boot it out of the box, so OS X and Windows. With something like rEFIt you can triple boot it too with OS X, Windows and *nix, if you're that way inclined.

It all depends on what you want to do as to why you want / need a mac. If it's gaming, forget it, PC's have always been better. If it's the usual surfing, email, word processing then it's a harder choice as to what to go for.

For a laptop it's a kick *** graphics card, certainly better than my friends embarrassment of a gaming laptop thing. And as for making your own, show me your home built unibody case and glass multitouch trackpad, and you have the wrong buttons on your keyboard.

Don't be so tight, you could buy a Focus and put Ferrari wheels on it but it's not the same is it.

ignoring the OS component, the MBP does feel like an awesome laptop.

I have a MacBook Pro that I got a couple of weeks ago. I have to say that I dislike it with passion. Everything is SO difficult on the Mac.

Want to disable something in the firewall? Drop into terminal and sudo. Really?! Unix commands to become superuser on such a friendly machine?

The menu bar at the top that changes for each application is just silly. Windows stopped that years ago.

And breathe ....

Cisco VPN disables local access, it can't be switched off. So list the firewall rules, find the one that is doing it and delete it.

sudo firewall etc..

you need to research , i do use little snith though

http://kb.iu.edu/data/aozg.html

Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... . When the System Preferences window appears, from the View menu, select Security.

Click the Firewall tab.

Click Start or Stop to enable or disable the firewall, respectively.

To configure the firewall, click Advanced... . In the sheet that appears, there are a number of options:

For the strictest option, check Block all incoming connections.
Check Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections to allow digitally signed applications access to your network without prompting.
Click Enable stealth mode to have your computer ignore pings and similar software that attempts to discover your computer.
Use the plus and minus buttons to add and remove applications from the firewall. When added, you can either allow or block traffic to them.

Click OK to save your settings.

No couldn't do that, as the VPN adds rules on the fly that you have to kill. On the otherhand I'm quite impressed that a 'simple' machine for non-computer users has an underlying unix structure.

I guess it is what you get used to. The MacBook is a thing of beauty, but I have put dual-boot W7 on it and I'm happier now
