Default Laptop with Vista won't do anything !!

I'm trying to help a mate whos laptop is playing up. It's running Vista Home Premium.

Once switched on, after about 2-3 minutes nothing works, I can move the mouse pointer around the screen but clicking on icons does nothing. After a few minutes it switches itself off. It does exactly the same in safe mode aswell.

Tried doing a virus scan in safe mode, I can get the scan to start if I click on the program as soon as the laptop starts up but after only 1 or 2 minutes it freezes again. Sometimes it will switch itself off and sometimes I have to hold the power button.

I would have tried a system restore but they had it switched off so there's no restore points.

Has anyone got any ideas on what I can try to do with it ?

You could try running Task Manager sorting by CPU and/or Memory and see if any software is going over the top.

You could always open it up and clean it out. My old laptop was full of dust and would only work with a cooler pad. Cleaned it out and it was like new.
