I've read a little about what causes and how to fix this. A friend has a faulty 60 or 80gb PS3 and has since bought a replacement. He's offered it to me cheap, i'm just wandering whether it's worth buying and repairing?!? £30 sound about right?

i got a refurbished one from sony for £130 so technically you can have a sony ps3 60 gig which is able to play ps1 and 2 games for £160

If it's a 60gb one and the warrenty sticker is still intact, it will fetch more then £30 on eBay.

no permanent fix for the ps3 whatever anyone says, it can be fixed but how long it will last nobody knows, i have had customers last 12 months then some just 3 weeks. if it goes to sony they will just replcace it with a refurbed unit and you should be good for a couple of years, sony will fix it as long as its not registered to your friend if it is he would have to send it back. if it went on ebay it would get about £50.
