Serious question. Why is a boon to you? I don't need my phone to tell me where I've been and I cant think why anyone would want that feature.

I love Tracking. I try to track myself using all sorts of apps and devices. Who knew that a fair part of the job was being done for me, and in SQL format! The wireless access point list is interesting.

Tracking apps have been around ages haven't they? This app doesn't log or track anything, it displays the data that Apple are logging about your movements. This data is open to any application you install and it is transferred to any computer you sync with.

You just can't remember where hence why you need to be able to use the tracking?

Wrong, the data is not available to any app you install under iOS.

Correct, It's not new and it's in pretty much every license agreement, but I'm pretty sure it's the first time it's been available so easily.

LOL, that must be some lifestyle if you can't remember a whole country. Are you James Bond?

Been having a nosy at what my phone has to say about where I've been.

The bit I've not figured out yet is how to translate the timestamp into something readable.

Timestamp is the number of seconds since Jan 1st 2001.

Add 978307200 to it and pop the number into here:

http://www.epochconverter.com/

Hit the Timestamp to Human Date and you should get your date.

Or if you are doing it programmatically you can use the UNIX timestamp functions

I didn't mention iOS. This application runs on OS X does it not? So I could develop an application on OS X or windows and have access to this data without the user knowing? Is the data in the folder encypted in any way?

You didn't mention any OS, you left it for people to assume.

You can tick a box to encrypt the file.

Thanks!

I'd tried converting it as a unix date, but was getting "nonsense" dates.

I've just dropped the information into Google's Fusion Tables; it's fairly accurate, but not pinpoint. It shows clusters, which show where I've spent an amount of time (for example the office), but few show a precise location.

Love the spin Jack :-)

While I think tracking is wanted by some and could be a useful thing, the concern is more that Apple have not fully disclosed the phones did this. It's been found by third party researchers. I've no doubt if you found this in Android you'd have been up in arms about it.

It's like the app you never knew you wanted, but had all the time.

Who says it's not in Android?

That's ok then depending on how hard it is to crack.

Not sure why the news are all over this? If it was in the terms and conditions since being introduced then they are hardly secretly tracking anyone. Plus you can opt out apparently.

Android does not collect tracking data.

I don't blame them for jumping all over it, it's major news, another first from Apple.

It's only major news as people think Apple are secretly collecting tracking data, when it is no secret. And this new application that makes use of the data is nothing to do with Apple. What exactly is the Apple first, the fact they are storing tracking info on your phone which is then transferred to any computer you sync with, unencryped by default?

This tracking has been going off since iOS 4 so why were you not posting about it about a year ago? Apple have not released any application that makes this data useful for the end user to date. They are simply sharing it with their partners and still, up to present, have not intended it to be of any use to the public.

The 'first' was a bit of a joke, but it's obviously based on fact or we would have already discussed it.

Or you can untracker (sic) yourself by putting your iPhone on Ebay and buying an Android phone that doesn't secretly track your every move
