Default Sky email / live mail issue

Has anyone actually managed to set up windows live mail to send using the sky outgoing server?

I've been on the phone with their help desk for over an hour tonight and they cant get the issue sorted.

I want to receive my work emails via my windows live client at home, and as I have sky as my internet provider I have to use their outgoing server details.

I can receive emails ok, however when I try to send I keep getting issues. All the people on the help desk want to do is get me to go on to the sky website, and in the help section type POP3.

Consequently, this is the information it gives you but when I explain to them I dont want to use the recieving email settings through sky its when the problems begin.

Configure your email program:

Open Windows Live Mail.
Click Add Email Account.
Enter your complete Sky Email address and your password.
Enter the name you wish to use for this account.
Tick Manually Configure Server Settings for this Email Account and click NEXT to continue.
Enter the following information in the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: field:
- POP3 - pop.tools.sky.com Port 995
- IMAP - imap.tools.sky.com Port 993
Tick “Outgoing server requires a secure connection”
Select Log On Using “Clear Text Authentication.”
For Log On ID please enter you username including the @sky.com part.
Enter the following information in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field:
SMTP - smtp.tools.sky.com Port 465
Tick “Outgoing Server requires a Secure Connection”.
Tick “My Outgoing Server requires Authentication” and click NEXT.
Click FINISH. Your email account should now be successfully set up.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Fitz

they seem to be asking you to use secure SMTP -- which unusual if you are already connected the sky network - i.e. you have authenticated to it

try using telnet to test the underlying tcp connection

i.e telnet <smtp server> 465

it should open a connection to the email server

and telnet <smtp server> 587 should allow you to submit email with correct credentials

this will eliminate any email client config issues

Hi Hodgy,

Thanks for the reply, but running the risk of sounding daft - I'm a little lost with your explanation.

Just to check everything, I set up my sky email exactly as they wanted in my first email, and that wont send either.

I wonder if they're having server issues?

Actually it turns out that sky wont let you do this for some reason.

Are the any other options for sending emails from live mail and not using my isp smtp server?

Hi Hodgy,

Yes was on that website last night and joined the forum and applied for their smtp details. Just waiting to hear back from them now.

Alternatively, I could just tell sky to cancel my broadband and I'll get BT in or something instead that I know will work.
