New PC
My PC hard drive has just failed, which is quite annoying! But the whole pc is old.
I'm thinking of building a new one, but have been out of touch for years now.
I would buy everything new, inc case etc.
What is the CPU to go for now-a-days? AMD? Intel? Which one?
I don't want to spend a lot really, as I just use it for the internet, a few downloads etc. No hard core gaming. Probably £300 max. (Don't need a screen, just base unit)
Can anyone recommend a half decent build please? I use to use ebuyer.com, are they still decent?
Cheers

Can't help with specifics for your case (well, I could, but can't be ar5ed to go looking for you .... ) but I'll be looking myself soon and have a list of *things* that a new PC *should* have (for me anyway).
CPU: buying now then get the latest and greatest Intel 'Sandy Bridge', of '2nd Generation Core' CPUs - just announced and shipping any day now. ... http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/sandy-...iew-32090.html ... for more information than you probably want! I'll be after a quad-core but you would probably be fine with 2 cores.
SSD boot disk - 64GB ( or even 128GB) - fast boot times and application loading. And look at getting 6Gb/s SATA.
Data disk - depends on your data needs. Lots of movies/music? Silly (because of their low price) to get less than 1TB these days.
USB 3.0 capability - backwards compatible but lots of peripherals are headed that way.
Unless you have specific requirements for Linux I'd go for Windows 7.
My take on things anyway. The above will future proof you to a certain extent. At least as much as you can in the IT world. For 6 months or so .....

If its just for light duties, this should serve you well enough. Might even be worth sticking with Windows XP as I'm not sure 7 would provide anything XP doesn't.

All I could suggest for DIY was something based around a Celeron E3***/ Asus P5* mboard, a £45 1 TB drive and some £30 DDR2 RAM, but that's all a few years out of date and would work out the same price as the above unit.
