Default Why can I not install windows on my "new" pc

Finally got my components that I ordered of buyer on 23 December, I had a dell e521 am2 5000 pc it was good but the hard drive started to go then the video card packed up...... So stuck it in the cupboard for a year and just got round to rebuilding it.

I have bought a new as rock motherboard , case, power supply and hard drive but I can not install any version of windows!

Tried windows 7, windows vista, win xp, every version of each one and they all throw up a random obscure error.as soon as the install starts the computer starts to bog down with the install pages taking ages to load. I have 4 x 1gb memory 2 matched pairs tried both and they both do the same. I have also tried an old hard drive with no improvement.

I am ready for throwing the whole lot out the window as this really has me stumped........

Hi there which ASRock MB you have?

My guess at this point is that you have a SATA hard drive, not PATA, and Vista is not loading the SATA drivers as part of the installation. If the drive is a SATA interface (and any machine that recent is liable to be that), you will have to locate SATA drivers (for Vista) for your motherboard, save them to diskette or USB thumbdrive, and when rebooting from the DVD, press F6 to load the SATA drivers.
Something similar happen to my friend with Vista

It's a N68C-S UCC, windows 7 requested drivers during installation but it never worked will see if I can figure out how to get them working before the install starts....

How you "installing" windows??

Are you booting from CD, or you installing once up and running??

As I have had issues with previous windows up to and including Vista, and always have to install Windows 98 first as that is needed for some bizarre reason.

Try install Windows just with 2GB memory and 1 HDD(if you are using 2,unplug second one).
And probably,if you are installing W7,Vista(because you are get error message),you must set AHCI in BIOS.
For XP must be turned off.

Any chance you could log the hours you spend trying to get this to work? I'm trying to build a case for buying Apple Computers.

Hi there depend which Windows you are installing,if you are installing W7,Vista you are need enable AHCI at BIOS.
If you are installing Windows XP AHCI(with some problems, but working well) is also supported, just double check at BIOS.
Try re seat memory to other ports(if you have now at yellow, try blue ports),your GPU is not issue.

I don't think this will cause, just have look and double check USB,this may cause problems, unplug every USB(Just don't unplug keyboard and mouse),if you have plugged Card reader unplug, front panel etc.And after you will see.
And last question HDD is recognized?

Ok,you can try set memory.
You are installing Windows from USB or CD/DVD?
And unplug all unused USB(front panel, card reader etc.)

You could download & burn memtest86, boot it, and let it run though... see if it rules out faulty RAM.

Is the Windows disc clean & unscratched? Do you have another optical drive you could use?

Is the heatsink seated properly? Is the CPU temp holding a sensible temperature?

The ammmount of cash he will save will far outweigh the hours spent by building a PC over the massively over inflated cost of an apple

I have similar problems with customer PC(old PC with Pentium 4),which have fried USB ports and just boot take 6 minutes with all USB plugged, with unplugged USB take 2 minutes.
Just try unplug every USB(inside unplug Card Reader,Front USB panel),at rear leave plugged Mouse and Keyboard.

tried it with another hard drive last night (500gb sata) and it still would not install, so its got to be a faulty mother board. I can not think of anything else. I have tried every setting in the Bios and still nothing changes

Hi there you are tried with unplugged USB?
If yes,i think will be faulty, just check warranty and never buy MB form ASRock,i still use only Asus and Gigabyte.

When I was making a Hackintosh, it turned out my old DVD drive was knackered that I'd recycled through a few machines. All sorts of weird installation problems. Since it was installed it even though it works nicer than a MacBook (faster, higher resolution) I still use it as a PC rather than a Mac.
