Sony's new PS2 chip could reduce cost of PS2
#1
A new development by the technical bods at Sony could result in cheaper PlayStation 2s, Gamecubes and Xboxes
Sony are in the process of developing a new, more cost-efficient processor for PS2 that will combine both the Emotion Engine and Graphic Synthesize into a single 0.13 micron chip. How thrilling, we hear you sigh.
What it means, though, is that with PS2 having a bit of competition from Gamecube and Xbox, the reduction in the cost of manufacturing the console may well be passed onto the consumer. This, in turn, should then force both Nintendo and Microsoft to lower the price of their own consoles in response in order to remain competitive.
It's all speculation at this point, of course, but it does go to show that the more consoles that are out there, the better it is for gamers - and that's what matters.
