Default Ethernet over Power

Hi All

I am looking and wanting to get my broadband connection over my electric lines at home.

I ideally would like to have 1 for the office in the garden, 1 in each of the kids rooms which would be 3. Can you plug in a switch/hub to give more ports ??

Also which kit would I need ? I have been looking but can't make out which is the transmitter and which are the receivers. I presume i would need 1 transmitter and 4 receivers. Is that right

Have you thought about maybe asking in the computer section?

The only thing people are worried about in NSR is bashing terrorists and waffling on about various political nonsense

stick to the known brands. i have the Netgear AV 200mb/s version and it's bloody good.

[by front door] ADSL -> micro filter -> modem -> powerline adapter

other power line adapter in living room -> router

works really well.

Be careful with those things - they will slow down your toaster.

I've got 4 of the ones BT use/give out with their Vision box, and they are great.

However, with that said most of the 200Mbps variety use the same undelying chipset. So none is better than any other really. See here.

Which ever you choose, make sure they're all the same. There are 2 standards at the moment, Homeplug and Powerline and they are not compatible with each other. eg DLink are Powerline and BT are Homeplug.

BT ones are Comtrend powerline.
Excellent devices but radio hams don't like the EM and I've found the early white Comtrends affect wireless mice/ keyboards. Otherwise they have been great.

Can only comment about Comtrend units, but they are all physically the same item but can be assigned to an AP or transmitter role.
This can be set-up by pressing a combo of front buttons (never worked for me) or just by accessing each unit at a time via a direct cable on a router.
Assign one as AP and make sure all of them have the same network ID and password.

Currently using some Devolo AVPLus ones in the house and have a built in encryption. No problems whatso ever. Even use a Switching hub on one of them to create another 8 ports and this works well. All connect to my Draytek router and stream well.
The must be popular as everywher seems to sell out quick, and these ones have a plug connector on them so you don't loose the socket for just the network box.

Argos are selling the starter pack @ half price, but good luck at sourcing any :-(
