I'd go for 2000 at the moment and in 6 months or so go XP (when its settled down)

Hi,

I have been using XP from the start - i have had no major hassles at all. Just make sure you regularly run windows update and keep upto date with ALL the updates

Its very well to say XP is great and stable, etc but you really want to match the spec of your laptop to the OS.

You don't want to be running Win2k or XP on something with less than 64 or perhaps 128MB for example.

...ok, thats a decent spec - I'd look at XP or Win2k Pro, and when you put it on do a CLEAN install eg. start from scratch. There's a ton of horror stories about people who UPGRADED from Win9x to XP.

XP only started to shine when I got 512MB

Anyone who tells you Win98SE is as stable as Win2k or XP is either lying or a fool. Give him a slap and tell him not to darken your door again. Then when he turns around to leave, kick him up the ar$e for good measure.

I really wouldn't bother with Win98SE if you have the option of Win2kPro or XP (XP is the most recent of the 2 and has lots of toys like video editing and colourful desktops)
