Question

Is there anyway to disable services in NT without it booting in NT or VGA mode? Is there any floppy disk utils that can do this?

you need to edit the registry...

HKEY_CURRENT_CONTROLSET\Services\ServiceName\Start

And set the value to 4 for disabled..

You can edit the registry from a boot disk using linux have a look at the following site for downloads...

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

Yep as above - just export that bit of registry to a .REG file and distribute it to the workstations. Don't see the need for the Linux bit - the service will be disabled on next reboot.

How can you distribute the reg file without the machine booting? I was also assuming that the machine was running ntfs..

Otherwise I would say just use regedt32 and connect to the machine over the network..

Thanks for the tips chaps. In fact it turned out to be a hardware problem. We swapped the mem chips over at it boots OK now, so we are able to logon and disable the services via the control pannel.

Cheers anyway :shrugsholdersortofembarrasedicon:

Ah - you didn't say it was for a fecked server Nimbus

David - I said distribute the REG file so it would take effect on next start. Just bung the fix in the logon script. Had to do that for 6000 workstations that didn't like the protected storage service, worked a treat.
