Default External Hard Drive Recommendations

I am looking at purchasing an external hard drive to store my forever growing collection of music and films.

I currently have a 250GB Toshiba HD but this is way too small & has quickly run out of space, so am looking to buy a larger unit. 1 TB would seem to be a sensible minimum.

Cost is obviously a concern, but so is reliability, so what would you currently recommend?

Thanks in advance

Phil

I would buy one of these as they run nice and cool as an external drive where typically there is no fan to cool them.

I'd then get this caddy

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173389

It has USB2 (slow) or eSATA (fast) ports so if you have an eSATA port it will be as fast as an internal drive.

no, you dont want to get that! the enclosure/caddy is for a 2.5inch hdd and the hdd is 3.5inch!

my recommendation is to get an external RAID. something like this would do nicely... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160644. comes with NAS too as a bonus.

had a friend who had a 2TB USB external hdd. put all his eggs in the hdd and the hdd went **** up!

As above guys recommend NAS its great.
As above guys recommend look for external HDD which support ESATA,FW(Fire Wire),because USB its too slow(if you something(100 files and more) copying from main disc to external its painful slow,if you have fast USB2 HDD you will speed about 45mb/s in worst scenario you will see no more than 20mb/s),USB3 HDD are now too overpriced and no every laptop,PC have USB3...
