Another vote for AVG, never had any issue with it and always picked up anything untoward. Did try AVAST a few years ago, but the computer used to slow down during a scan

Best free anti-virus is not to use Windows at all - switch to Linux, and you just won't need any.
Otherwise, all anti-virus programs will slow down a computer when they do a scan up to a point, so if that's the only thing stopping you from using AVG, then just get into a routine of setting aside 20 or 30 minutes a day for the scan to run before or after you'd normally switch the computer on or off, so it doesn't interfere with you actually using it.

No they don't. This is 1 of the main reasons why AVG is pants. MS essentials doesn't slow a pc down at all. Very low RAM n resources usage to. AVG uses alot.

Comodo Internet Security is very good - it has lots of extras and doesnt slow my machine down when scanning. Ive tried AVG and MS Essentials and tbh they work fine, but i dont use windows firewall because its vulnerable to attacks as its far too common - Comodo offers that little bit more.

MSE would be my first choice.
But I have to say that I've just installed McAfee on a friends Mum's Laptop. Being an ex employee I know the software quite well and was expecting a bit of a disaster, but it was fine. Expensive, but fine.
