Question BT Wall Sockets.. who sell's em ?

Evening chaps

I'm looking to fit a wall socket to run BB through.... I have a cable routed already but it has an old connector on it which I don't think will be suitable for running BB on (the line crackles until you touch the connector) so looking to chop it off and fit a wall socket in it's place. Some of the new BT sockets advertise increased speed etc are they available to purchase ? or is there an engineer out there or will any phone socket from e.g. Maplins do ?

Thanks
Simon

Any phone socket will do. Should be a piece of cake, there's only 2 wires. Connect these to pins 2 and 5. Use a small thin bladed screwdriver to punch the wires down if you don't have the right tool.

Don't forget to plug the microfilter in to the socket or your broadband speed will be appalling.

Cheers LostUser... a standard Maplins one should do the job then.

I assume the new BT one's just have filters on board then opposed to the plug in adaptors ?

Silver s s, You should use a branded socket for a master socket i.e. openreach logo, or an older one with BT logo.....the newest Openreach branded NTE5 master sockets have a filter bell wire, maplin sockets or any other non branded DOES NOT...other than that, it does not contain any other filtering. A seperate SSFP (NTE2000) frontplate is available and filters all extension wiring, do not mistake one of these for so called
the booster frontplates though.....

i am an ADSL engineer for Openreach, also a Specialised ADSL 'converged' engineer for BT Retail, tell me your exact setup ( what type of wire is attached to the property, (colour) follow your wire from where it attaches to the property, any connection boxes, how many wires into and out of a connection box, look where it enters the house, any joining boxes in the house, how many wires in and out, then on to the Master socket, what type is it (smaller than a single gang power point? (LJU2/2a), or the same size as a single power point with a seperate 'frontplate' (NTE5)....are there any extension after the master socket (plugin or wired)....I will then be able to tell you how to check and alter the existing wiring in your home for optimal speed.....(new builds with multiple extensions are notorious for causing speed issues, although most people are unaware that their ADSL could be much much quicker, and accept it for what it is)

btw i work in and around the s wales valleys, Magor is out of my area though, although i sometimes cover converged ADSL tasks there if the local guy is unavailable (theres 6 of us covering south wales as opposed to triple figures of standard ADSL engineers. If you are near to magor exchange, you could pop by and try to collar a friendly engineer, and aquire an NTE5 and SSFP of him.

Great thanks for that info I'm having a reorganise here for want of a better way of putting it, there are 2 lines coming into the property the one is my account with BB plugged into it and the other runs a phone only which is not my account yet, I am going to cancel this line and transfer over to the original house line hence having to run a new socket here for the BB to run off and then go to the one line only. The house is about 40 years old so no new installs here. The main line in is downstairs and the BB will run off an extension to upstairs where the hub is installed as I run the PC via ethanet connection.

I'll check out the wiring as you have suggested tomorrow all being well and post up my findings for you.

Once again many thanks for the help.

Technically you're not allowed to touch anything to do with telephone wiring until after the BT master socket. Though if you were to tell them it was like that when you moved in how are they to know

Read this for everything you would want to know and a lot of stuff you don't: http://www.rob-r.co.uk/other/UKphonecatwiring.htm
