Looks a bit overkill to me bud. Theres a Firefox plug in called Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/) I installed it a few weeks ago and haven't seen an ad since

Click on the little arrow next to the ABP icon
Click preferences
Click filters -> Add filter subscription
Click EasyList then Subscribe

It's a Firefox application GC, but Firefox is cross platform, so can be applied to any OS.

a custom host file is a really good trick, I have been using one for years -- a word of caution -- a large host file can slow Windows 2000/XP as it will parse the file on startup of the browser
