Default PS3 as a media centre help

What is the best program to use to convert a DVD (recorded from sky) to PS3 video format (the best quality). I have just tried one and the quality was crap!

1. Rip the DVD into one big VOB file using DVD Decrypter
DVD Decrypter Free Download and Reviews - Fileforum)

2. Encode the VOB into MP4 using 3GP Converter ( 3gp converter PSP - PlayStation Portable - Reviews, Games, Forum)

If you have a Mac - Handbrake will rip a DVD to PSP format.

Do you really need to re-encode as doesn't the PS3 play vob files? I don't want to continously lose quality.

won't it just play the vobs from the dvd ??? The best video converter I have found is AVS which converts muliple formats and is the best I have seen. I don't think its too big and I may be able to email it to you ???

Steve,
That's what I thought about the vobs.... just have not had chance to try it. I don't want to re-encode unless I really have to. Thanks for the offer of AVS, but I think I have that somewhere. Just bought another PC build today, so will undoutedly be building that up tomorrow (and the rest of December lol). I will give it a punt if I get chance tomorrow.

I have finally set mine up as a media server and mine is only recognising AVI files at the moment, so its not seeing the vobs or mkv files. I know it will play these as one of my friends hyas his PS3 working this way

Am intending to get a PS3 in the post-christmas sales primarily as a media player. I've been doing a bit of research and if you're in to streaming content from a PC then this seems to be what people use

Thats what I use aswell over my wireless network. Which works fine for .mkv HD series etc, but can struggle I find with full HD movies but thats down to being on wireless im sure.

Another +1 for PS3 Media Server. Does exactly what it says on the tin. No problems with 1080p+DTS steamed via cables.

Yes it is very good - when it works

Mine randomly decides not to work, and then the only course of action seems to be change the port number and start again.
My port number is 44000, I change to 44001 and back to 44000 whenever 44001 stops working

Great bit of software that I have been getting to grips with over the past few days. Started transferring my SKY recorded films from DVD to my PC. This works well over wi-fi when you adjust the settings to suit. Finally a reason to own a PS3!
