Possibly your MTU etc are set up wrong.

Go here --> http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks/ and try the tweak.

I had the same problem as you when I first went to broadband, as my system was set up optimally for dial-up

There is an issue with MTU size within Win XP. WinXP defaults to a MTU of 1500 over PPPoE and the maximum MTU for ADSL is 1492. There is a reg hack on the Microsoft site to change the MTU.

If your not using XP then you should be able to change the MTU size easily.

Thanks I'll look at the MTU. I think I did tweak it previously for DUN and "gaming" (LOL joke) with 56k. It is windoze 2k. I gather from newsgroups others have had problems too.

Why did you choose Pipex of BT's openworld.
I'm moving to an area where I need to have ADSL as telewest are not in the area.
Any Advice would be greatful, and I will be networking 4 machines to it.
Cand ADSL be put into a router of is it a USB connection, needing me to have a machine on to modem share.

rgds,

Dave.

If you choose to go wires-only you can then purchase your own ADSL modem/router which can have either USB or ethernet. I don't imagine you'd buy a USB one if your going to use it for multiple PCs. Don't forget you'll need some sort of protection since the connection is always on.

Pipex - prices, reputation, reviews. But I'll have to see, not impressed so far!
BT - generally horrendous experience with BT, Cellenet, and BT Internet for customer service, connectivity, billing, the lot!

It is much better tonight. Pages now load very quickly - Scoobynet ones in about 0.5 seconds. Sometimes though, it times out. I did tweak things using the above site. It seems more a demand problem than config related.

Go and have a look here:

I have been trying to load the ASDLguide pages and the Pipex Support pages many times this evening - usuaully they time out or display blank pages. Same with Scoobynet. Then suddenly it goes like the clappers. No emails from them.

At times it is MUCH worse than 56K modem. Other times much better. We'll see. I'm just fed up with excuses from ISPs - started with Freeserve, then Greatxscape, then LineOne, then BTi, then Tiscali, now Pipex. Every time it went crap and I could not connect and the service went down the toilet. I believed ADSL might be different. I still hope it is and is a temp problem, but I have actually used 56K dial up a few times today as it is quicker!

Dear PIPEX Customer

Re: Network Performance

As you may be aware, there have been intermittent periods of poor network
performance over the past week which have affected the levels of download
speeds experienced by some of our Xtreme ADSL customers. We apologise for
any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Our network engineers have already deployed extra equipment to try to improve
the situation and are continuing work to return service levels to our normal
high standards.

In the meantime, in order to improve network performance as quickly as
possible we are taking the unusual step of moving users immediately to a
brand new 155Mbps BT Central link. This should ensure that network performance
returns to the normal high levels that you would expect from your PIPEX Xtreme
service.

Your connection is being moved to the new BT Central connection this evening,
Tuesday 12 March 2002. Please accept our apologies for the short notice.

After you have received this email you should disconnect from your ADSL
connection and immediately change the login realm (the part after the ‘@’ sign
in your login) from dsl.pipex.net to xtreme.pipex.net

Note that no other changes are needed, to your user ID, password or any other
part of the system - only the realm need change. For example, if your login is
currently adaa00@dsl.pipex.net simply change it to be adaa00@xtreme.pipex.net
and reconnect.

Once the change is made you will be using the new BT Central connection and
you should see a corresponding improvement in network throughput.

Once again, our apologies for these current network difficulties. I would like
to reassure you that we are all working very hard at PIPEX to provide a
service that you and us can be proud of.

Best wishes

David Rickards
Managing Director

hope this helps

I've never had any problems with Pipex yet, but they do appear to be very forthcoming about problems and try to sort them out quickly. There is a guy from Pipex who regularily posts on adslguide to inform people of what's happening.

Stuart

A VERY happy PIPEX ADSL customer !!

OMG! Just seen a 14 MB file download in 3 1/2 minutes

I think it is working properly now

There was a sustained transfer rate of about 550kbps all the way through

John. I used to use pipex as a business solution, I sacked them in the end because they were not forthcoming with information regarding port sharing. I eventually spoke to an engineer who explained how many people they had via one router, this could well be your problem, especially as it's intermittent.

Obviously, they are not going to admit to this in all circumstances.

Think thats called the contention ratio

As it gets more popular people will find that there performance decreases....

The trick with ADSL is to live in an area where everybody is too old to have heard of the Internet, like me!.

I've used BTO since April last year, and my downloads are always in the 58-62K/sec range. At that speed, you get approx 4mb/min.

Cheers,

Alex

I though DSL was superb to start with but the quality degraded sooo fast I got it primarily for internet gaming and after about 2-3months it was completly unplayable 4-10 packet loss and 60-140 ping

I now have NTL Cable which although technically inferior, in reality its much better

Angry

Modem dial up with Tiscali was unconnectable most of the time. I got Pipex ADSL at the weekend. Initially it felt very fast and speed tests showed download speeds of up to 480kbps. Web pages displayed very quickly.

However, yesterday and toady it is slower than dial up some of the time - ie email times out, pages cannot be displayed, one minute to load Pipex homepage. Then it does like the clappers again.

I can play online Q3 and UT now pretty well with consistent pings between 60 and 120ms.

But overall I am pretty disappointed. Even 64kbps streaming audio has the occasional glitch and rebuffering.

Am I expecting too much?

Others on the newsgroups say things are a bit slow at present.

The speeds I am getting at present are about the best you would get out of a 56K dial up!

Am I suffering at the hands of a 50:1 contention ratio? www.numion.com showed 10k (bits) per seconds across UK site repeatedly!!

John

I would say that possibly you are expecting quite a lot. Pipex do have an excellent reputation but remember they have to use good old BT as a network.

Is your connection speed varying? A good test is www.dslreports.com. If so you may have other users soming online and utilising the connection. I thought with Pipex you got a 20:1 contention ratio. I have seen friends connections drop to ISDN/analogue modem speeds at peak times. A good test is to download off pipex's own site then off a good high bandwidth site such as tucows or the network associate site and keep note of time of day etc etc and see if a pattern builds up.

As to telewest/adsl which is better well telewest have a lower contention ratio so tend to have IMO the faster overall service. BT IMO have pissed about with their network a little too much over the last few months ending up in outages etc.

We are a test site for both networks and there is a huge load on both from badly configured servers outputting huge quantities of Nimda attacks.
My server at home is taking some 500 hits a day from Nimda attacks and that really pisses me off as it is completly avoidable.

Do put a small router/firewall between you and your several PC's you will need it as most residential adsl/cable connections will only accept a single MAC address. Look at the netgear range of routers they plug and go if you want a little protection use the FR314 or the RP314.

John,

Have you received the email from Pipex regarding their "intermittent periods of poor network
performance"? It seems that there IS a problem, they ARE aware of it, and they are implementing a solution.
The suddenly fast speeds are due to them asking everybody to switch over to a different network link. You're probably one of the few left on the old one!

[Edited due to bad English!]
