Default Checking broadband speeds

I'm sure this is an extremely easy thing for someone who knows a bit about computers!

I'm on Virgin Broadband and i've been upgraded from 2mb to 10mb broadband, I'm just wondering how i actually check the speeds i'm getting rather than just taking Virgin's word for it?

the fundemental fact of internet speed is that the ISP can only guarantee speed to and thru their network, which will be your entry point to the internet, they have no control over any other part of the internet.

if you have a 10mb connection, but you are accessing a webserver in the states that only has a 2mb connection then you aint gonna get 10mb worth of speed

its like the local council guaranteeing you a 30mph limit to the end of your road, great, but if you turn into a traffic jam after you leave your road, you still arn't going anywhere very fast, and just like that fact that the light doesn,t work in your fridge its got nothing to do with the council or the ISP
