Tethering works by connecting a device which can access the internet to another device which cannot. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology or cables (such as USB). This allows the device without built-in internet access to connect to the web, using the other device as a modem.

It also allows O2 to take iPhone owners roughly from behind, by charging £14.68 per month for a 3GB allowance bolt-on, and £29.36 for a 10GB even though they're paying top whack for unlimited internet access.
