Please help, Mums Laptop! I need a PC Expert :)
A friend of hers has tried to reinstall Windows XP on her laptop. Anyways it has a few problems which he can't solve and she needs it fixed so she can talk to my brother who is in Australia.
Please note that its had 3 fresh installs now and still the problems are there.
Both are in Device Manager showing a yellow explanation mark.
First one is that the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller seems to install twice! So obviously one has the explanation mark saying Code 12 this device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. I have tried uninstalling one but it comes back! Why is it doing this?
Second is the video card. Its a NVIDIA GeForce4 488 Go. It says This device cannot start (code 10). I have tried updating the driver, removing, reinstalling etc. No joy. The screen has also got coloured lines all over it which it used to do whilst it was loading up xp but once it loaded the screen was fine.
Spec of laptop is that its a Pentium 4 2.60GHz and 512 RAM. Name is a Cybermaxx made by a company called Meridon who have no interest in helping me! So don't ever buy off them!
Bios has been updated but its such a basic one I can change very few settings and this hasn't helped.
Please can someone help so my mum can get back onto Skype!

I shouldn't worry too much about the 1394 host controller, this is for the firewire port & unless you use any firewire devices it shouldn't be an issue.
Graphics you'll need obviously if you're Skype-ing. Have you been to nVidia's website for a driver package, or are you using device manager to update the driver ? Website option is the best.

Okay you need to take a step back and do the following:
1. Write down the make and model of the laptop (turn it over and read the serial number tag, should have a model code on there)
2. Browse the internet on another PC (or that one if you can get access to the net) and find the manufacturers website or enter the search term "laptop make model drivers" where laptop make and model are the details you found on the laptop.
3. Now you need to download the following drivers:
a. System Drivers (probably Intel Inf or something the laptop)
b. Network drivers (either broadcom or Intel Pro 1000 somink)
c. Sound drivers
e. Any other drivers
4. Run/Install the drivers in the above order, once you have all that working and there are no more question marks in the device list go to Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies and download the GeForce Go drives for the laptop (may not be there and you will need to get these from the laptop manufacturer website as you had to for the other drivers above).
5. Install the nVidia driver and reboot and you should now be sorted
With laptops you have to get the right system/motherboard drivers installed otherwise everything else fails and hopefully if the laptop is a decent brand then there will be a support website where you can download all the necessary drivers.
Dell for example (support.dell.com) let you enter the model number etc and then you can drill down and get the relevant drivers but their website is imo is horrid in it's layout and you can get lost trying to workout where.T.F you are.
Try that, if you're stuck then post the make n model of the tiptop n I'll point you in the right direction with links and stuff

oops just noticed you posted make/model - can you flip the laptop over and get the model code and whatever else you find on those serial number stickers as most of these odd brand laptops tend to share the same hardware as the budget Acer brands.

Hi Finalzero
I have been onto the Manufacture website Meridon and got all the drivers from there. I have also tried to get help from them but they are not interested.
All other drivers are installed ok apart from the ones above. I'm at a loss
The Model Number is FID2040 and the MD 6488.
As I said Meridon just ain't interested in helping as this model is not on their script

Well I'm stumped. I'd have recommended what everyone else has said to do.
It'd probably be quicker just to buy a new laptop. Not what you want to do, eh?

I'd keep trying. Pointless buying a new one if evrything else is working on it.

I really want to get this fixed for her to be honest, I know its just a driver issue and it will give her a laptop for what she needs.
Someone must know the answer!
Thanks to everyone trying to help I really appreciate it.
Enjoy your night out SW

DriverMax - FREE driver download program for Windows XP & Vista
run the unknown hardware wizard, get the drivers, then un-install

I don't think it's a resource conflict (well for the VGA card anyway) as device manager says the device has failed to start. This leads me to think there may be a hardware fault with the graphics card, or the wrong driver is being used. Another possible reason for the fault is left over bits of previous drivers : try running Driver Cleaner then re-install the drivers

Personally I would uninstall the offending items (by software not physical) Uninstall the graphics first then boot into safe mode F8 after the post beeps, then run the nvidia setup for the graphics, reboot and that will probably be fine.
Then I would uninstall both firewire controllers and reboot and see what happens then.
