Best way is using Ghost. It'll adjust the partition size on the new drive, so if you go from a 8Gb to a 20Gb drive, you'll get one big 20Gb partition and not just 8Gb and 12Gb of free space.

If you clone the c:\ drive of one PC to another (different make and spec) you will be in all sorts of bother.
Copy the data to a CD or across a network and re-install the programs from scratch.

I just removed the hard drive from my old one onto this one the last time i upgraded hence why this one thinks it's a amd and not a pentium without any problems apart from the name thing.

The hard drive on the new pc is bigger hence me wanting to copy most my software to the new pc as i cannot get some of the programs i would have to start again.

I think i'm just gonna go for it and see what happens. What sort of probs would you expect jack?

Ozzy cheers.

Well, your current drive will have all the hardware settings from your old pc. So when you clone the drive and put it into your new PC it will complain that your Video, Sound, Network? and other hardware isn't installed.

If your running 2000, XP or even 98 then it shouldn't [edited] coz you much hassle. The likes of 95, NT4 and more problematic.

The OS should detect all your new hardware, so you can install all the necessary drivers and remove any of the old ones.

In an ideal world, you'd want to do a complete new install of everything with your new PC, then just copy the data across.

I'd rebuild on the new PC, then add the old one as a Slave and just do a copy using Windows Explorer.

Cool

Currently using windows millenium on this pc and millenium is on the new one too. Moving from a p3 450 with a 10gb drive to a p3 833 with a 20gb drive.

When i swaped the drives last time it just said new hardware found and installed it all fine. I hoping once i clone the current hard drive the new pc will do the same.

Heres hoping.

There's no doubt a complete fresh install is better, but I've moved disks between machines with different hardware and been gobsmacked by how well Windows (95/98 etc.) copes. If the graphics are different you can make life slightly easier for yourself by removing the drivers on the starting machine and running as generic VGA or SVGA before you clone it.

Ozzy said it all - but I'd want a clean installation of Windows on my new kit.
