Default wireless problems

got the other half a new compaq laptop for christmas and before i throw it back at pc world i thought i might ask on here if anyone can help
it connects to my wireless network but only stays connected for a min or two then i get limited activity and have to disconnect and reconnect
any ideas ????
i have 2 other laptops that are both wireless that dont have any problems

Could be all-sorts .... think i'd start with encryption settings first assuming you're running them? - try disabling the encryption on the access point for a short time (an hour-ish) so that you're in effect running an "open" network and see if the problem is still there If it goes away then we've got a starting point to look at

Anything's possible I'd reckon it's unlikely though - firewall only applies to the traffic going in and out of the wan-side (internet in this case) so shouldn't make any difference to lan-side (home system). Plus if it was firewall somehow bouncing the connection then it should do it right from the start rather than allowing a connection and then dropping it.

has made me wonder though ..... Phil : when you get the limited activity bit, what's your ip address showing as and also, can you see the other machines on your network either by network neighbourhood browsing or by "pinging" them?

not really that good on computers but will have ago regarding the ip address later..

have noticed it only seems to do it 4 or 5 times then settles down and is ok .. if this helps
