Going mental is usually disk activity because something has used all the memory and the system has to write to your swap/page file on disk.
Click the memory column to sort by usage and identify what's the top.
Usually, wouldn't expect to see anything over 150,000k

Same thing happened to me recently. Turned out to be a piece of malicious software 'malware', which was identified by using the following...
It wouldn't hurt to go and get this free anti-malware program which will scan for a remove any nasty software:
