Question iPod & iTunes - PC getting formatted

I have all my tunes and all my photos on one iPod and one laptop.

The laptop belongs to my wifes company, she is being made redundant.

Part of the package is she gets to keep the laptop... but it has to be formatted first to purge company data etc.

So what's the best way to go about it, I want to obv. get my tunes back on, plus iPod is a backup for all my photos;

1. Sync iPod with laptop
2. Deauthorize the laptop
3. Once given back in whatever state, install iTunes
4. Put iPod tunes back onto formatted laptop
- Do I have to reauth it? It's the same laptop

If I was user 123 before formatting, and now I want to be user XYZ, does that affect anything? I mean for the photos, won't the iPod want to copy it back to it's original folders.. and if I am a different user will it still be ok?

Documents and settings\123\My Documents\My Pics Versus
Documents and settings\XYZ\My Documents\My Pics

God, I am so **** with this stuff Markus, help me!!!

BTW, I did a google scoobynet search and I searched up the apple store, sorry, but found nowt that was 100% plain as mud to me.

I've never put pictures on an iPod, so I don't know what the deal is with regards to copying them from the iPod to the computer, you may be able to do this, makes sense if you could.

When it comes to music, you cannot copy from the iPod to the computer, Apple's attempt at copy prevention.

You can have a read of this for info on how to copy the music from the iPod to the computer. This should allow you to get the music from the iPod to the computer without too much fuss.

What I would probably do is to jump into the My Pictures and My Music folders and copy the contents to something, probably an external drive, or the iPod in disk mode, if there is enough space. Then do the de-auth, then when things are reformatted, copy the items back on and you should be good to go.

** edit **

I found this discussion about copying photos from iPod to computer.

You can auth up to five computers, plus there is a "Deauthorize All" option which you can use once every year if you run out of authorizations, but yes, if you are sure you have everything copied off, it would be a good thing to de-auth the computer.
