I also have ADAWARE - t'is good but it isn't a firewall or antivirus pack so he needs to refer to my earlier post also.

OP - YOU SHOULD ALSO LOAD ADAWARE AND RUN IT EVERY WEEK!!!!!

Please give me options - WTF is NOD?

Bear in mind I have 380 days licence on NIS to run.

NIS seems good to me - I've never had a problem.

Why do you say Norton is bad?

Most IT people use ESET. None use free AVG or Symantec/Norton.

NOD AV is all i would use + pay for. Everything else you can get for free, ie, firewall, malware, etc.

Zone Alarm is a pretty good FREE firewall
Malwarebytes do decent malware/adware progs.

Visit Javacool Software for some other pretty decent free security tools.

Whatever you chose, be prepared to pay for the full version. I work in IT and I would recommend full firewall/AV engines from in no specific order;

Trend Micro Systems
AVG (I use this at home, bit clunky IMO, but most importantly it works)
Zone Alarms

Forget Nortons, that used to be the leader, but not anymore. I also use the Windows firewall and sit behind a router with robust security for my home network (I work from home a lot too, so it has to be secure).

It's funny the number of people who seek advice on forums like this and then get told that it matters not if computer related security professionals offer suggestions.

That's a bit like being told to ignore your mechanic's advice when he offers suggestions to fix a problem with your car. Go figure!

I have used Nod32 for years now and it's always been fantastic (touch wood).
Before i used norton which like has been mentioned, can make things run slowly.

Nod32 is good, you can get kasperky internet suite off ebay for a tenner, that's firewall, av and is just as good as nod if not better.

New Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 Disk on eBay, also, Antivirus Security, Software, Computing (end time 18-Jan-09 00:02:38 GMT)

if you want to pay, then NOD32. if you want free, then AVG. nothing wrong with AVG or even norton. dunno why people like to slag it off. if it is really no good, it would have gone bust!

I can't believe any IT professional would recommend AVG. It's unreliable, lets through an alarming number of viruses, and doesn't deal with the ones that it does detect very well. I wish I had a tenner for every AVG installed machine I've had to recover <sigh>...

Another vote for the eset products here. They now do a combined Antivirus and Firewall package as well (called smart security)

ESET - Antivirus Software with Spyware and Malware Protection

Norton does a reasonable job of virus detection, however it does use a lot of resources to do it. You machine would likely run even faster with Nod32 installed

A quick question. If your virus scanner isn't detecting certain viruses, how do you know if you've been infected or not?

The free version yes because the AV signature files aren't updated when new files are published. If you have the full version it's one of the best out there for home users. Having said that however, if you visit "dodgy" sites...NO AV engine will fully protect you.

No it's not. I have had to rescue 3 machines since december, (and several others last year) all infected, and all with the full version of AVG installed. I know the people any they were not infected by visiting dodgy sites either. It is not a goods anitvirus at all, and should not be "recommended" by any IT professional.

It shouldn't be a pi$$ing contest about what you do in it. Recommendations are subjective due to different ways people use their computers!

I use Avira at home and at work, but that's because we distribute it!

That said, I'm very impressed with its low footprint and doing what it says on the tin!

There are serveral "independant" sites such as AV-Comparatives which rate anti virus software, so may be worth a look before buying.

Not a pi$$ing contest at all. I'm just surprised that an "IT Professional" could recommend a product that is not very good, is unsecure, uses lots of resources, and leaves your computer open to infection.

I've never had to rescue a machine with Nod32 or Kapersky (or several other leading brands like Norton) installed. They have been several other posts on scoobynet over the last year with people getting infected whilst having AVG installed.

If that is subjective then so be it

working in a University when I was in support I had to rescue several machines with AVG, as well as people asking advice about thier sons laptop etc

Lecturer: My sons laptop is running very slow, says it has viruses it can't clean
Me: Does he have security software?
Lecturer: He has AVG
Me : I'll take that as a no

Nod32 all the way for me, sometimes PC world has Kaspersky going cheap which I would also recommend, looking into deploying this in the Uni at the moment
