Default XBOX 360 vs XBMC questions

Hello all,
I've currently got an original xbox which has been modchipped and is running the last but one t3ch XBMC build, thus providing me with a lovely media player, and it's region free when it comes to DVD's, which is always handy.

I've not really kept up with what the 360 can/cannot do in regards to playing media/dvds, hence this topic.

I'm going to assume that the 360 is region locked and without some modification (firmware flash?) and if you do mod it then you're LIVE experience will be rather short lived.

What about media playing, can it stream media from a network drive, for example, via SMB?

What about video files. I have a few torrents, mainly in AVI format (ok, I know that doesn't help much, as it does depend how they are actually encoded) and would need to know if they could be played without issue.

Any comments appreciated.

Only issue may be the DVD regions although I don't think it is. The rest the 360 can do although probably not as nicely as XBMC. I've not seen what they've done with it for a while now.

That's all out of the box for the 360 BTW

I use the Xbox 360 now instead of the original Xbox to stream movies and TV shows that my wife insists I download (Desperate Housewives etc..). It happily streams from the uPNP network server or from my PC. It'll happily play DivX, Xvid and MP4 amongst others. This is without any modification.

I haven't found a way of making out of region DVD's work on the 360 without hacking the firmware (which I don't want to do). The only solution is to 'back-up' the DVD which removes the region protection.
