Hi I've got a Playstation 3, along with a (please don't laugh) 21" CRT TV to play it on.

Seen as I don't have a HD TV I'm only using the RGB scart sockets for connectivity. I'm also using a 2.1 speaker Logitech setup for sound - which I'm happy with

My question is as follows:

If I upgraded to a HDTV with 1080p, how would I connect my speakers up to the PS3, as they only have a 3.5mm jack not the optical connector that the PS3 has.

Is there an adapter from optical to 3.5mm? Or any other way that I'm not thinking of

i connected my ps3 to my monitor via HDMI and the sound comes through the monitor okay - not sure what spec the sound is (2.1, 5.1, etc) but my HDMI lead is v1.3a

 

Thanks, I'm still looking to use the external speakers though as I don't like the built in speakers much on most TV's.

My parents have a 40" Samsung 1080p TV which I believe has component connectors and HDMI. Is it possible to plug the HDMI cable from this tv to the PS3, then connect the component cables from the TV to the 3.5mm audio jack via a connector but still use the HDMI cable for vision only?

 

HDMI cable > tv
SONY composite cable > £2 adapter to combine L+R into single 3.5mm > speakers

go into PS3 display menu and set video output to HDMI
go into PS3 audio menu and set audio output to A/V MULTI

can u set ps3 too out put via componet for video and output audion via hdmi?
