Default Are any of you developing iPhone apps?

I'm really wanting to get a few things into Apple's AppStore to make some cash.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Are the api layers substantially different to win32?

Do I have to have a mac to run/compile xcode apps?

Basically you need the iPhone SDK. Your first port of call should be here. I'm fairly sure it's Macintosh only, well, more specifically, OS X only.

I've got a good friend who develops software for the Mac and he's also developing a few apps for the iPhone, so if I see him pop up on MSN I'll ask him a few questions and post the replies here.

What I'd suggest in the meantime is that you sign up to get the SDK, it's free, and it'll also grant you access to various articles, FAQ's and code samples, which might help you work out wether it'll be worth an investment of your time.

thanks Marcus, that'll be helpful

my g/f got me the iphone developers cookbook for christmas and didn't realise you need a mac to develop with the SDK, so I'm waiting for the new mac minis to be announced at the next mac expo thing - one of those with 4gb should be fine for a dev machine.

I should really learn how to code properly on OS X, and I do regret not doing so before now, it's not as if I didn't have access to the hardware, software, and more importantly the oracle's of knowledge that are our developers. I can knock up a funky Applescript with an interface in XCode though, so that is something I suppose

As for the new Mini's, hmm, I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. There have been rumors for quite some time about refreshed mini's and nothing much has happened. I agree it is certainly time for a refresh, and they are rather good machines and I've been tempted by them in the past. If they made the hard drive and memory as easy to upgrade as the Macbook's then that would be a massive advantage.

i'll be very disappointed if they don't do something with them - they are just the price point I'm prepared to spend at, but way out of hardware date.
