Microsoft have this on their support site: Three of the lights on the Ring of Light on the front of your Xbox 360 console flash red

Yes, I had that on Christmas day as my children were about to play their new game. I switched it off and randomly swore and prayed to any Gods that might be listening and 10 minutes later it was working again.

It still is, but I assume I will have to send it back to Microsoft at some stage soon.

Mate just had this at Christmas also with a 2007 XBOX360 arcade model. I never heard the last of it by Text
In the end he gave Microsoft a call and they told him to box it up in a neutral box and they would collect it. Apparrently UPS came and collected off him today, he now has a 2 week wait to get it back from repair

Mine did this, it's a common fault due to failing components widely believed to be heat in the mobo drying out soldered joints/warping the motherboard - although not officially admitted by MS. But MS replaced the mobo and DVD on mine without much hassle they also somtimes send a complete new unit, all new internals, or just add an extra heat sink. Sent via UPS, you just ring them up, they call and collect from anywhere and deliver back to you home. Mine was there and back (Germany) in just under two weeks. Done for free (although some of the older models are now out of the extended MS free support). Just log a support call with the Indian call centre - answer some of their stupid questions to ensure it is really RROD'd.

Got mine back with a months worth of Live! subscription (even though it was only away for two weeks).

this must have happened to millions by now. I don't think I know anyone with an XBox that hasn't had to send it back at least once

I've been through 3 myself. 2 normals and an eliete (one of those fancy black ones) and all have broken within weeks. The eliete was supposed to be immune to the problems of the normal version - but even with the optional fans that make it sound like a 474 taking off it still cooked itself inside a month.

Sold the 4th replacement and bought a PS3

Does it make any difference if they're not kept in a cabinet?
I'm guessing that it would as there's more cool air to flow through them.

I ended up moving mine so that it was totally on it's own with good air flow but it didn't seem to help in my case

Wood is a very good insulator - so I'd imagine that keeping it in a wooden box won't help matters much

Mine was laid down in a cabinet on top of an amp (that was on - ie heating up the 360) for about 23 months before RRoD'ing. I think it's pot luck if it RRoD's due to heat or not (and could be why MS haven't officially said there is a problem, because they still aren't exactly sure of the cause).
