Default mobile phones - changing tariff

Hi,

Is it possible to change to a lower tariff after taking out a mobile phone contract? If so, how long do you have to wait, are there any fees involved and is there a restriction on which tariffs you can move to?

I'm currently on O2 and would like to get an iPhone, but I don't want to pay £35 for 18 months...

PAYG is not an option, because the handset price is just way too much.

Thanks for any advice!

I've never done it, but I remember hearing that you could change tariffs a few months after taking out contracts.

I don't see why the iPhone should be any different to any other phone in that respect, but if anyone has ever done this (with any phone), please reply.
Thanks.

Bah. I'm on Three, they lock you from downgrading for the whole length of your contract. Bunch of cowboys. (albeit my fault for not reading the literature).

No idea about the other providers.
