Default Who is your ISP

Who gets you onto t'internet and would you recommend them? My AOL contract is coming to an end (Platinum package £10 per month instead of £29.99, I've complained that much) and I want a new provider.
Don't want a package, just t'internet. Who do you recommend

Not Plus.net any longer. Most of the good ones have gone down the toilet...

Zen have a good reputation I believe, won lot's of awards. The Gadget Show did a thing about download caps and bandwidth throttling and Sky are one of the few who's top price unlimited service is truly unlimited. I'm stuck with Clueless and Witless 2 Meg, I mean Cable & Wireless, the only alternative ISP's here only offer 1 Meg

O2 Broadband

I get 8mb for £7.50 per month uncapped. £5 discount for having an O2 contract phone.

I'm currently with Be*. Cracking so far, can't fault them apart from the odd DNS issue and lack of webspace.

Virgin.

Not sure what I pay but it's quick and reliable - the main things you need, I'd say.

Virgin, very happy with them and get very close to 20mb all the time. Although only available in cable areas so it limits your choice.

Avoid BT! 'Unlimited' package only gives you 10gigs per month, and it's throttled back for downloading torrents and file-sharing.

Best one I used was Newnet.

I'm with Nildram and can't fault them although they are not the cheapest.

The only down side is their webmail page. It's pants.

I would recommend Be* if you are lucky enough to be attached to an unbundled exchange otherwise Zen.

ADSL providers usually buy wholesale access from BT so you will get a similar experience from most.
AOL and some others have sticky contracts, terms and restrictions.
I'm on Virgin myself and the service recently has been fairly good, but they have a fairly poor record in general.

That isn't quite accurate. You will get similar maximum sync speeds between your modem and the exchange, but the experience of browsing and downloading can vary wildly as it depends on how much bandwidth they have bought from BT, any restrictions around ports that are used, any capping at certain times etc..

I have been with Zen for nearly 7 years now and never had a problem. I am thinking off moving to Be just becasuse they are cheaper and I currently have an attenuation of 10db on my line so should get a nice fast connection to my unbundled exchange.

Which is what I did. Zen were great and I didn't actually want to go, but Be* have been surprisingly excellent for the last 2 years and with download speeds from torrents of over 1.7mb/s you can't really complain ...

Have to admit - I've been with Vodafone since they set up. Took a bit of a risk, but for £20 (8meg bband unlimited/fair usage - getting a minimum of 6.5meg) including line rental and all phone calls, they've been pretty reliable.

Do get a discount though for my being a Voda customer anyway.

Impressed so far - cane the internet for downloading sporadically, and have never had any issues with them (nor them with me)
