Default Repaired XP Login Issue

I have a laptop here that had a corrupt registry. Its been 'repaired' using the XP Home CD, but now displays the message:

Logon Message
The system cannot log you on due to the follwoing error
The spcified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
Please try again or consult your system administrator

I've tried logging in as a user and also as Administrator, used a Linux CD to reset the passwords and still can't get in.

Any ideas?

try .\administrator

or <ip_address>\administrator

if you can't find the ip address download ipscan and run a scan of the local subnet from another machine

I'll try .\administrator.

Problem is its an XP Home machine, so isn't even on a domain and won't have an IP address, so I'm thinking its confused about the PC name perhaps?

what repair have you done as there are 2. The one where it actually re installs is the one you want, this is the second one (leaves everything installed all files in place etc)

I did the one that re-installs over the top of an existing installation.

I've since done this: System Restore from Recovery Console - CCL Online
and now get:

When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.

It then immediately resets.

Yep, that was the one. I had to put the licence code in again.

I've nuked it and re-installed. Too much time wasted outweighed the gains.

Thanks all for your help though
